Ordered smart tab sx from Trim Tab Girl on amazon. Arrived in a flash from those gals. About an hour to install on an Alumacraft Trophy 17. The nylon bolts used in the pivot locations seem inadequate at first but turn out to be fairly tough, I guess I am used to stainless hardware around boats and will change them out at the first sign of fatigue. I used quick set 3m 5200 to seal the screws and injected some into the screw holes before installation. I let everything cure for 24 hours then off to the lake to test. First I want to point out that my Alumacraft was no dog when it came to handling and is as fine and predictable little craft that ever made the waterway. BUT, I could not get over how effortless I got on plane and how well the boat handled. In fact when I slowed down to around 14 mph I was still planing! Bow lift was pretty much eliminated as well. I admit I was skeptical about the claims of increased top end speed but there it was on the gps. 3 mph over my former top speed in a 2 ft. chop. Impressive. The overall feel of the boat changed as well. Cushy is how I would describe it. Like a luxury car sort of thing. My hull is on the rounded side of things and would roll with the waves taken side-on while drift fishing. I was hoping the smart tabs would dampen this effect and they did to a degree. So few things I have bought in the past lived up to the hype that I have become the ultimate product skeptic. In my opinion the manufacturer downplayed the effect the Smart Tabs would have on my boat, for they proved out or exceeded every claim made...in spades. Are these the cure-all/end-all for a poor handling craft? Probably not. But I will go on the record and say they are the best money I have ever spent on any accessory for a boat. There is a huge bang for your buck here.

I never give 5 stars for anything but these deserve it. I have a 17' aluminum river boat that has some bad habits. It has what they call a delta pad. They have never been known for being really smooth on the water because they are supposed to run shallow. My problem is with two motors on back and a 30 gallon fuel tank it can tend to porpoise when you are running fast or in slightly rough water unless I keep the motor trimmed way down. Also because the boat itself is pretty light I really have to watch where I store things as it will tend to list to one side under power.

I took about an hour to put these one my boat mostly because I have a kicker motor I had to figure out a way around. I also had to drill slightly larger holes than the instructions called for an aluminum boat. I am guessing that because my boat is heavy gauge that there was less stretch in the hole. I ended up breaking one(They are #14 SS 3/4") and had to get a new one at Lowes.

I run my boat a lot and have tested lots of different props. I know pretty much exactly what it will run and how it operates on different conditions. When I put the boat in the river for the first time after the Smart Tabs the first thing I noticed was just how much better the boat came up on plane. Almost like someone was lifting it up flat with almost no bow rise. Touch the throttle and you were plane. I could also stay on plane at much lower speeds.

Next I had read some bad reviews because of turning. I made some really aggressive high speed turns and everything was great. Having the flat bottom the boat will sometimes slide out but this seemed to hold its line even better than before.

Finally I went out to find some rougher water and see just how fast it would go now.

I bought an old 16.5-foot runabout with a 110 outboard -- 800 lbs boat weight and 300 lbs outboard motor, plus fuel in the back and closed bow, so no forward seating. The previous owner had mentioned that it had a tendency to "porpoise" -- and they weren't kidding! Plus, it would "dig a hole" when taking off -- kids thought it was great fun to have the boat go near vertical on take-off, but me not so much. The former owner had installed a "hydrofoil" fin the outboard, which obviously did not solve these problems. There was really no way to trim the boat because it was so out of whack. My neighbor said he had installed these Smart Tabs on his boat and maybe I should give them a try. So, I did a little research and everybody loves them so much, I figured I would do just that... and, the rave reviews are right on! First time out, my little boat jumped right on plane -- the nose barely came up at all -- and the porpoising was minimal compared to what it had been -- I was even able to trim up a little bit, which I had not been able to do before. Obviously, I removed the hydrofoil before running with these -- seems like it steers better now too. Great product that truly deserves all the great reviews.

After seeing all of the positive reviews I felt confident that these would be good. And they are. Made from non-corrosive materials and very straight forward to install, with plenty of helpful resources from the supplier.
I am positive that these decrease my time to get planing and also increase the stability of the boat and provides a lower cruise speed on plane.
All good.
