Book Description

September 5, 2006
Navajo Heat is the new American novel. Steeped in struggle, Tuba City Navajo Nation Police Chief Benjamin Tsosi and his forensic psychologist, the Reverend Dr. Theresa von Prospel - who's also a death-row chaplain - have their own tragic, personal battles to win. Chief Ben and 'Dr. T' ultimately give way to the sizzling passion and sexual tension created between them over two years of collaboration. The mystical beauty way beliefs, hard science, high tech, martial arts, and loving compassion create their grid for success. The Chief is the only son of a WWII code talker and is a Vietnam War Vet himself. A former USN SEAL and CIA black ops, he appreciates the talents of his forensic specialist. The Chief teams up with the Doc for practical profiling to create the magic blend against crime and terror as sweeping changes take place on the Navajo Nation. Expect more from these characters - a warrior on his Pollen Path and the rebirth of a Mahayana Bodhisattva.

5.0 out of 5 stars Navajo Heat is intense, October 28, 2006

I am an avid reader and I haven't read a book that grabbed my attention so quickly. From the first page you begin to feel like you've known the characters personally. You feel their joys, their sorrows, their deep abiding love for one another, the sexual tension that culminates in some of the most sensual love scenes I've read. Mary Helen Madrid-Null writes these characters from her heart. You begin to feel as though you're a part of the story as it leaps from the pages to pull you in. Mary Helen Madrid-Null is truly a gifted writer, knowledgable and sensitive to the Navajo culture and it's customs. Using her own past experiences in critical care, and end of life issues, as well as being a Death Specialist herself, she uses these experiences to bring the story of Ben and Theresa to life, making both the characters and story 3 dimensional instead of just characters on a page. I am truly excited to see what the next stage will be for these characters as they continue on the path that has been destined for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exhilarating, October 15, 2006
This review is from: Navajo Heat (Paperback)
This book is absolutely amazing! Sensual, sexy, spiritual. Mary Helen takes you places you have longed for with a command of the English language that will take your breath away. She takes her experiences as a critical care nurse and critical incident stress specialist amd applies them in a way few people can. The characters literally leap out of the pages and into your mind. If you are a fan of Tony Hillerman, you will definetly become a fan of Mary Helen's. Your journey will take you where few others have dared to venture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Conflicted - but caught, February 7, 2008
By
Quiza (Scottsdale, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Navajo Heat (Paperback)
This is the first book I have read of its kind - and by that I mean totally from the heart (and, apparently, the hip) with no professional editing. I found THAT little fact, at first, unnerving - and even considered putting the book down for good. I am, however, glad I didn't. While the writing, to me, lacked polish, the characters are first rate. It really has been quite a while since I cared so much for two fictional people! And, in a way, it was probably the fact the book is unedited that led to the fullness of Ben and Theresa - the author wasn't censored, the descriptions allowed to go to the nth degree, you experience EVERYTHING about these two characters!
There were times (though, rarely) when I felt the story dragged a bit - but, at other times, it was totally engrossing. And, in the end, truth is, I am awaiting her next book with a sense of anticipation. The characters and the insights to the Navajo Nation are the shining stars of this book. And they are enough to make me return.
