5.0 out of 5 stars Navajo Heat is intense, October 28, 2006

I am an avid reader and I haven't read a book that grabbed my attention so quickly. From the first page you begin to feel like you've known the characters personally. You feel their joys, their sorrows, their deep abiding love for one another, the sexual tension that culminates in some of the most sensual love scenes I've read. Mary Helen Madrid-Null writes these characters from her heart. You begin to feel as though you're a part of the story as it leaps from the pages to pull you in. Mary Helen Madrid-Null is truly a gifted writer, knowledgable and sensitive to the Navajo culture and it's customs. Using her own past experiences in critical care, and end of life issues, as well as being a Death Specialist herself, she uses these experiences to bring the story of Ben and Theresa to life, making both the characters and story 3 dimensional instead of just characters on a page. I am truly excited to see what the next stage will be for these characters as they continue on the path that has been destined for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exhilarating, October 15, 2006
This review is from: Navajo Heat (Paperback)
This book is absolutely amazing! Sensual, sexy, spiritual. Mary Helen takes you places you have longed for with a command of the English language that will take your breath away. She takes her experiences as a critical care nurse and critical incident stress specialist amd applies them in a way few people can. The characters literally leap out of the pages and into your mind. If you are a fan of Tony Hillerman, you will definetly become a fan of Mary Helen's. Your journey will take you where few others have dared to venture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Conflicted - but caught, February 7, 2008
By
Quiza (Scottsdale, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Navajo Heat (Paperback)
This is the first book I have read of its kind - and by that I mean totally from the heart (and, apparently, the hip) with no professional editing. I found THAT little fact, at first, unnerving - and even considered putting the book down for good. I am, however, glad I didn't. While the writing, to me, lacked polish, the characters are first rate. It really has been quite a while since I cared so much for two fictional people! And, in a way, it was probably the fact the book is unedited that led to the fullness of Ben and Theresa - the author wasn't censored, the descriptions allowed to go to the nth degree, you experience EVERYTHING about these two characters!
There were times (though, rarely) when I felt the story dragged a bit - but, at other times, it was totally engrossing. And, in the end, truth is, I am awaiting her next book with a sense of anticipation. The characters and the insights to the Navajo Nation are the shining stars of this book. And they are enough to make me return.

4.0 out of 5 stars Desert Mystery, Adventure and Romance Heat Up, August 24, 2007

This review is from: Navajo Heat (Paperback)
Navajo Heat grabbed me right away. Instantly lost in the story, concurrently watching my own mental films of places I have have been blessed to visit too.Nothing like a novel like this based in familiar territory!

Mary Helen is an exceptional writer, teacher and healer. Her genius carries one across mesa's, desert floors, vast expanses of this unique geography in rapid fire pace. Sprinkling these magical lands with Native Tales, down and dirty real life ordeals, plus humor.

The author brings her characters alive as Native, First Nation, Peoples interact with Dr. T., her friends and colleagues, in this fast paced edgy novel.

A master story teller, she inserts factual proceduralpolice work, great forensics, shoot 'em up action, on and off horse back, sizzling romance and more, are delivered one great book.

The reader treks along with Dr. T and the characters inner dialog, on everything from types of firearms used and why, rescue ops, gsw's to reality based visits into the morgue.

Not to worry, M.H.Madrid-Null is an artist when it comes to breaking high tension at critical intervals. At just the right moment she offers brief breaths of relief, with humor and bits light hearted tender prose.

Drawing upon her many areas of knowledge, Ms. Madrid-Null pulls the reader in fast.

Buckle your seat belts, as you are off and racing with Navajo Heat's action plus information packed scenarios.

I look forward to a series from this talented writer!
