Book Description

June 1992
This recording began in 1965 when the author was recording Navajo creation stories from friends of his—Ray Brown, Jimmie Blueeyes, Rae Joe, Raymond Tsosie, and, most importantly Jay DeGroat from whom Gerald learned much about Navajo healing practices as well as mythology. In that sense, Jay (Jooghi, or Bluejay) is as much the creator of this audio book as Gerald. All in all, these are the interlocked tribal stories that have woven the great Navajo nation into one of the largest indigenous tribe in the world. As storytellers, the Navajos have no equal as they create a moral code for harmonious living with all things. Ambient sounds and music by jazz musician Ray Griffin whose work can be heard on the other recordings in this series.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This is the oral Navajo equivalent to the Christian Bible --Frank Waters, Masked Gods

A revealing sample, astutely collected --Tony Hillerman, author of Dancehall of the Dead, Coyote Waits and other novels

This well-narrated collection of twelve traditional Navajo stories has good sound effects and background music. For all collections of mythology—highly recommended. --The Book Report --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Gerald Hausman calls himself a native of the world after living in so many places in the United States and the West Indies. He spent more than twenty years in New Mexico where many of his American Indian folktales were collected and published. Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1945, Hausman has been a storyteller almost since birth. His more than 70 books attest to his love of folklore, a passion instilled by his mother who painted the portraits of Native American chiefs. During his thirty-five years as a storyteller, Gerald has entertained children of all ages at such places as The Kennedy Center, Harvard University, St John's College and in schools from one end of the country to the other. Five audio books have come out in recent years and two of Gerald's books have been made into animated and folkloric films. His books have also been translated into a dozen foreign languages. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

I am an inveterate storyteller, which is to say: I love to do it, am helpless not to do it, and I do it all the time, even when I am by myself there is an inner monologue going on in my head. This habit of privately roving around in the land of legends is something I've done for as long as I can remember. My mom worried about me when she saw that I spent too much time by myself. I would creep into a closet and close the door and in the silence of the darkness I would spin tales of all kinds. I was never lonely as a kid because I had the imagination of a wild thing, and I was content to play in the fields and valleys and secret caves of that imaginary world.
