Book Description

1930536046 978-1930536043 August 1, 2003 1st
This fascinating book details one of the most interesting and historical symposiums ever presented at the U.S. Naval Academy. Sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, the primary objective of this symposium was to address and highlight the U.S. Navy’s significant developments in science and technology related to diving, special warfare, and submarine search and rescue. The symposium attracted national press coverage and highlighted the U.S. Navy’s contributions to diving and submarine rescue through lectures, panel discussions, and oral history recordings.

A secondary objective was to capture and preserve the historical base of knowledge in these disciplines that in many cases reside only in the minds of the contributors. The many attendees, students and faculty listened to historians and naval experts from around the world discuss some of the most daring and dangerous missions of the past century, as well as learned about the future of undersea technologies. In effect it served as the "passing of the torch" from one generation to another and yet it refocused attention on the future of undersea warfare.

The symposium was a once-in-a-lifetime assembly of living icons in U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare from the past 60 years. The hope is that these Proceedings will help preserve the history of this important component of the U.S. Navy’s past and plant a few seeds for future leaders in our Naval Forces Under the Sea.

5.0 out of 5 stars A History of Underwater Technology, Special Warfare, Science, and Submarine search and rescue, June 5, 2006
This review is from: Naval Forces Under the Sea: A Look Back, A Look Ahead (Hardcover)
In the spring of 2001 there was a symposium sponsored by the U.S. Naval Academy and the Office of Naval Research held at Alumni Hall at the Academy. The biggest and brightest "stars" dealing with the Navy's underwater world were all gathered there. Their purpose was to address and highlight significant developments in science and technology related to diving, special warfare, and submarine search and rescue. This event was an historical happening. Those who were privileged enough to attend it, experienced what was the equivalent of the Navy's own underwater version of "Woodstock!"

There were keynote addresses and exhibits to the delight and education of those who were there. I was personally unable to attend this myself and being an old SCUBA instructor and history buff, I really felt that I had missed out on something very special. Now through the efforts of both sponsors of that event and The Best Publishing Company, the public can now read all the major keynote addresses and get photos and charts and drawings of some of the exhibits. All of the major elements of that symposium are now in a book simply called: "Navy Forces Under the Sea - A Look back, A Look Ahead." Truly one of the best volumes of information of its kind in the world! There are no other books like this with so many experts adding their remarks, comments, and visions to the fabric of this Naval History book.

This book is easy to read and is presented with a great assortment of color layouts, photos, and drawings. A must read for anyone going into this field or anyone who is a true Navy history buff. This is the "Bible" of underwater history as related to the U.S. Navy. It makes for fascinating reading. This book is given the MWSA's Highest Book Rating of FIVE STARS!

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute "must-own" for your military science library!, March 8, 2005

This review is from: Naval Forces Under the Sea: A Look Back, A Look Ahead (Hardcover)
The amazing book is an absolute "must-own" for anyone interested in military science, especially the United States Navy. "Naval Forces Under the Sea" is lavishly illustrated with full color photographs, drawings and charts. The book is divided into THREE MAIN SECTIONS: (1.) SUBMARINE SEARCH & RESCUE (2.) NAVAL SPECIAL WARFARE (3.) DIVING AND SALVAGE.
Each section then proceeds to lists the findings in detail. This book is in essence a TECHNICAL manual, however it is so well presented and the sub-sections are so logically laid out that I actually found it a rather pleasant read! The wealth of information presented in this bound volume is truly fascinating! I own many books about the U.S. Navy, but by far this book is the most unique that I have in my library collection.
