4.0 out of 5 stars Naval Warfare, April 2, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Naval Ops: Commander (Video Game)
I bought this game after playing Naval Ops:Warship Gunner and found it similar, but different. The game play has the same basic story, has slightly better graphics, and some extra weapons. I prefer the Gunner's scope versus Commander's birds eye view of the battle. The escort ships can be like watching an old 3 stooges show sometimes. Some of the battles ar unrealistically difficilt, while I could pulvarize a "supership" in no time flat with a simple premade ship. Despite thos flaws I am already addicted to it. The play in this game is faster than Gunner's, so it will keep your intrest longer without having the timeless travel through the sectors. I recommend this to anyone looking for a naval battle game that has a love for ships and the high seas.

4.0 out of 5 stars More mayhem on the high-seas, August 5, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Naval Ops: Commander (Video Game)
Okay...so it takes you a moment to adjust to the story line. But odds are you already played "Gunner", and so have an idea of what you're up against...the whole alternative time/universe thing. With bad guys...only more evil.
Koei kept the enjoyable things about "NOpG", and tossed in escort ships ala AC5. You can still work to improve, modify and customize your own little killing machine fleet. A note here: there's nothing, absolutely nothing in the game that will behoove a player to create the "ultimate" aircraft carrier. You will die, repeatedly.
The scenarios are challenging as they move along; although there's not a great deal to cue a player on how to increase their total rewards...these are vastly important in terms of obtaining a range of upgrades.

G4TV's "X-Play" gave the game a horrid review; likely because the host is utterly clueless on combat games that aren't of the FPS variety. NOC has a few bizarre twists in the story plot (and even more in the bonus scenarios), so it will take some suspension of belief to get a player through. You want a great story, read a book.
Koei has done a fair job trying to extrapolate data on verious weapon system effects and applying them to a video game (a 100cm gun would be hurling a 39 and third inch diamter shell), and you do get to blow the snot out of towns or anything else within reach of your weapons.
Unlocking all of the esoteric goodies can be a time-consuming process, but the end results are great fun. One of the better aspects of the game is the ability to return to previous scenarios/battles and stockpile points by generating victories.
Be cautioned that there is an exceptionally whinney female VO that will get on your nerves...reaching into the screen to make it stop type of get on your nerves.
On the big scale, NOC is a 8 out of 10 for fun, and about a 6 for replay. It's a keeper for those times when you feel the need to unload a few 61cm salvoes.

I bought this game because I like war simulation games. I think this game is really easy until you get to the second area then it gets a little harder. But it is still really fun to play. One of my favorite parts of the game is that you can design your own ships, like an aircraft carrier with aircraft or a destroyer. One thing I dont like about it is it has some levels that are really hard and then the next level is really easy. Also i dont like the commander's view because you cant rotate it and because it sometimes gets annoying. Overall i would give this game a 4 1/2. Also i would wait for this game to come down and dont buy it brand new, buy it used for $35 or less.
