If you will look around the internet you will find that this is a very common problem and there is no fix for it.

I have spent a ridiculous amount of money in labor costs to try and remedy the problem to no avail.

I was shocked to read these negative comments about the Navine NP-240. Michael and Son installed mine over two years ago and it has performed flawlessly. An endless supply of hot water delivered quickly with no issues - save for the confusing programming panel. I use a high quality water filter to reduce as much water-borne contaminants as possible and natural gas, a little cleaner than propane. I follow the recommended service schedule but there is never any scale buildup to clean out.

It has to be extremely frustrating, not to mention expensive, for these other owners to have the types of problems they're describing. I feel for them immensely and wish them all the best.

I purchased this model 3 years ago and have had nothing but problems since. I have had leaky pipes inside the unit that need to be replaced, multiple false error codes, and most currently the unit is not working but not showing any error codes. The unit stops working and I'm left without heat or hot water(which was extremely fun during the wintertime) unless I unplug and plug the unit back in. I have spent a ridiculous amount of money in labor costs to try and remedy the problem to no avail. Navien has just sent me new parts for the boiler and seems as though I'm replacing it piece by piece but will never get sent a new one. Customer service reps have been nothing but rude on the phone and unhelpful. I hope this review helps and stops someone from purchasing such a faulty product.

After 9 emergency service calls this winter, with no heat or hot water, we have barely avoided frozen pipes and a ruined house renovation. We read the reviews online and ignored them--we hoped we would not be one of those people who got a defective product. But please consider this before you buy this--NAVIEN REFUSES TO REPLACE THE PRODUCT UNDER WARRANTY! Be aware that they (perhaps logically) replace one part at a time (which can take months), to determine what is the defective part of their product. (they also will blame your plumber until it is clear it is their product). After 3 months of incredible stress and the house being 40 degrees INSIDE while emergency plumbers try to find the problem, we wished we had not purchased this product. We have filed a complaint with the BBB because of failure to honor the warranty. But this is little consolation for so much lost time and frustration. We hope no one has to go through what we did. After three months, we still have not been able to get a replacement unit.

My propane 240 unit has been a problem virtually from the beginning.
The system has a safety feature that won't allow it to start unless at least 1/2 gal is flowing through it per minute. Not a problem on its face, but the way the unit tells how much water is passing through is by the use of a flow meter. A flow meter is a small plastic turbine inside a tube; as water passes through the tube, it spins it. As it spins, it swings a magnet(I surmise it is a magnet) round and round. There is a pickup on the outside of the tube that records each time the magnet passes by, the computer then makes a calculation with that figure which tells the unit how much water is passing through.

The "flow sensor" is a terribly weak link in the system. Sometimes it turns, sometimes it doesn't, and you don't know which until you get into the shower. If you will look around the internet you will find that this is a very common problem and there is no fix for it. It is not going to be fixed unless Navien will completely redesign its flow meter. Rennai does not have this problem, though I dont know how they measure flow.

When I first started dealing with Naviens' customer service, they were rude, arrogant, and incompetent. Eventually I did get a Navien Tech supervisor, Bryan Coccia, he at least has done his best to try and resolve the problem, and he is still trying, but at this point, I dont think there is anything he can do about it other than just give me a refund, because no matter how many flow sensors he gives me, or if he replaces the whole unit, it will still have the Navien flow sensor, and the Navien flow sensor, as constructed, will never work properly.

I would like to just get my money back and go buy a Rennai, which does not have a similar problem.

I have a cr201a-na Navian hot water heater. The sent me the home owner into the attic to fix the flow sensor at 6 months old when under full warranty. Now the unit is leaking in my attic at three years old and they could care less. I was told I would have to find a local plumber to come out and inspect the unit then they would send out a kit consisting of a new board, hoses and elbow to replace the parts in the unit and I will have to pay a second service call for the plumber to come out and replace the parts. I think they know their hot water heaters are garbage and poorly constructed and do not want to stand behind them. but that is my opinion. Otherwise how would they know what they were going to send out before anyone ever looked at it? When I told the tech at Navian this was leaking into my ceiling he acted like he could care less and just wanted to get me off the phone.
