Here is a practical guide for leaders and their organizations to position integrity as a practical business strategy for cultivating effective, engaging and ethical cultures.Integrity in its broadest context is more than just good character and ethics; this book demonstrates how dong well in the marketplace, doing good (or at least no harm,) engaging work and meaningful lives are not independent, but integrated challenges.
Mr. Watts clearly lays out the business case for integrity, and demonstrates how to shape more productive, ethical and engaging workplaces by successfully navigating four fundamental integrity challenges: Identity, Authenticity, Alignment and Accountability. Drawing from his rich experience as a consultant and inside organizations, the author employs numerous examples and practical exercises to help readers apply principles first to their own lives, then in their organizations.
As the author states: "Leaders and organizations that integrate ethics with effectiveness and values with value will be those that transform 'business as usual' into business at its best. This book is for those aspiring to be that kind of leader and that kind of organization."

Al Watts has 25 years of experience as an independent consultant helping leaders and organizations succeed by aligning people, systems and strategy. He holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota and completed his graduate coursework in Organization Development at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. After a decade in private industry, he decided to follow his calling to help organizations and companies function better by establishing common ground and helping them solve problems together. He lives in Minnesota with his wife and has two grown daughters.
Many books describe the downside of missing integrity. But case studies of Lehman and Enron have been done.
What impressed me about Al Watts' book "Navigating Integrity" is that he covers the upside of integrity, of making and keeping promises, and of accepting accountability. These are the basics of any business, and Watts covers these topics beautifully.
Leo Hopf, Author of "Rethink, Reinvent, Reposition"
Navigating Integrity is very well written and the concepts fit together well as a mosaic for building an ethical business. That said, I think the real addition that Al Watts makes is in the connecting of these concepts to the day-to-day work of the organization. It becomes apparent when you talk to him that he has thought through how to make this conceptual model work inside an organization so what he has done is develop a systematic way to assess the ethical nature of a working organization. As we all know, in business it is the implementation that counts!
Al Watts is a business consultant and a sailor. He uses his experience and lessons learned from both in his book Navigating Integrity: Transforming business as usual into business at its best.
The book is well done from its jacket and cover that reinforce the sailing metaphor Watts uses throughout the book to the focused structure and practical and rich content. In a brief introduction, Watts explains the book's format and introduces his Integrity Model that he developed through his years of consulting. That model serves as an important part of the book's framework. Chapter one is a succinct, but insightful, explanation of the importance of integrity and the difference between integrity and ethics. Chapters two through five describe the "integrity challenges" in Watts' model. Those challenges are Identity, Authenticity, Alignment and Accountability. He devotes a chapter to each as he highlights how crucial they are to the success of one's character and relationships. In the final chapter Watts provides the reader with useful capabilities that support the four challenges. He puts them in an easy to remember template: "....3C and 3D capabilities". Those 3Cs and 3Ds are Competence, Courage, Consistency and Discernment, Dialogue and Discipline. He goes on to demonstrate how each C and D can help with each of the challenges.
Watts does an excellent job of providing meaningful examples and pertinent quotations to illustrate and support his observations and points. At the end of each chapter there is a succinct summary of the important points and a few questions readers can ask themselves if they would like to do some introspection. A real bonus for readers is the opportunity to participate in the online Leadership Integrity Survey Watts' company provides.... It is designed to give participants an idea of how they are currently navigating the integrity journey.
This is a valuable read for anyone. The entire book is strong, particularly the Identity and Accountability challenges which raise questions about values, purpose and stewardship. The emphasis on courage in the final chapter was right on point
There is a great deal to like about this book. I recommend it to all business leaders and managers, personal coaches, and college business faculty. While it contains many business examples and references, it is really is a book for anyone interested in steering a course of honesty, purpose and authenticity in their professional and/or personal lives.Read more ›
"Navigating Integrity: Transforming business as usual into business at it's best" is a must read for students, and front-end employees up to the executive level. Author Al Watts provides practical information to guide any individual in leading with integrity. I will be purchasing this book for my son; it will be an asset to guide him in his leadership role as an Army officer. Thanks, Al, for this wonderful resource to guide current and future leaders.
With the recent meltdown on Wall Street, Al Watt's book, Navigating Integrity, could not be more timely. He makes a convincing argument that in order to find lasting fulfillment and success, we must embrace four specific values: Identity, Authenticity, Alignment and Accountability. While weaving in sound philosophy, business case examples, and personal stories, it's a quick read with a strong message.
The 4 Integrity Challenges (Identity, Authenticity, Alignment and Accountability) reinforce the impact leaders' behaviors have on employees and organizations. Great examples and quotes are used to illustrate the key points.
In addition, key capabilities and action-oriented questions identify ways for leaders to increase their effectiveness. A great read for leaders and coaches.
