"Navigating Newbie-ism: 12 Simple Ways to Thrive in Your First Job and Career" is a must read for all newbies. It is an excellent guide for students who are trying to get their first job as well as those who have just landed their first job, but are looking to make a good first impression.
I am an adjunct professor of psychology and I hear over and over how difficult "navigating newbie-ism" can be and how excellent grades and an impressive academic career are not enough. This book offers easy-to-follow tips and techniques for securing that first job and developing the behaviors that employers look for and value. After I read this book, I immediately bought five more as gifts for my intern, nieces & nephews, and college-age friends.
By utilizing interviews with employers, as well as young employees who are new to the workforce, Marcia presents a convincing argument that the key to succeeding in the workforce is to build a reputation for having a great outlook, demonstrating teamwork, and doing more than just the basics. While the concepts are simple, Marcia presents them in a way that is respectful of the reader and not at all "preachy." Instead of rolling their eyes, I predict that the college students in your life will thank you for this book. College students who read Navigating Newbie-ism and apply the 12 Simple Ways will certainly succeed in the workforce. In fact the book contains tips that are invaluable to workers at any level.
