Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-6–The process of mummification, the pyramids, and the treasures of Tutankhamen are only a few of the aspects of ancient Egypt that continue to fascinate readers, young and old. This book provides an overview for general interest as well as for those seeking information for reports. Topics include geography, rulers, and daily life. Also provided is information on tomb raiders, trade, taxes, and war. Each chapter spread is filled with colorful illustrations, photographs, and maps. The chapter on the dynasties gives a clear explanation of the five eras of Egyptian history. An explanation of the types of crowns worn by the pharaohs is also included. Focus, however, is not solely on royalty. A chapter on the pyramid builders describes the lives of these workers. Descriptions of their villages, tools, and even their graffiti seem to transport readers to Giza. Children also learn about some of the powerful women of Egypt, including Hatschepsut and Cleopatra VII. The last spread depicts the end of the ancient Egyptian civilization and the beginning of the Ptolemaic rule. The text is strategically placed to provide information and explanations of the illustrations without overwhelming readers.–Lana Miles, Jackson Elementary School, Rosenberg, TX. (c) Copyright 2010. From Booklist

In the style of DK, the double-page spreads in the Navigators series are packed with high-gloss color photographs, digital imagery, maps, and cutaways. But readers will want to look past the glitz, as each title also offers a substantial overview of the topic, with gems of information not seen in similar books. Ancient Egypt opens with prominent pharaohs and continues with life at home, within a palace, and amidst the construction of a pyramid. Although it includes such typical subjects as religion, mummification, and tomb raiders, it also comprises female rulers, taxes, and extensive trading expeditions (which returned with giraffes, frankincense, myrrh trees, and other treasures). While fact boxes, definitions (a glossary is appended), and quotes from notable authors and texts add to the browsing appeal of both books, a concluding list of further resources helps make them a good first stop in the research process. Grades 4-7. --Angela Leeper --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

These are great books for homeschooling or extra projects to challenge your little ones. My kids do go to public school, but we find ourselves supplementing a lot with books like these. It brings the historic subject matter to life and helps our kids imagine what life was like "back then". Great pictures and content; well organized. We own six of these books from Greece to Knights and Castles.
