5.0 out of 5 stars A great deck, but novices: beware!, August 3, 2005
This review is from: Navigators Tarot of the Mystic Sea: 78-Card Deck (Cards)
I was given this deck as a gift just over a year ago as my introduction to tarot.

Inspired by Thoth and largely based on the principals of Hermetic Kabbalah/Qabbalah, the 'Tree of Life' appears to be the "root" or theme of this deck. Beautiful and esoteric, but perhaps not one that is recommended for most tarot beginners.

As shown, the deck is of standard size. A few of the Major Arcana cards are re-named from their standard titles. The 'suits' are standard: Pentacles, Swords, Cups, Wands. The 'court' cards are standard: King, Queen, Knight, Page. There is a single word above each card's image that attempts to sum up the meaning of the card. There is no other lettering, nor is there traditional numbering on these cards. On the back of each card is the image of the 'Tree of Life'.

This deck is deeply focused on one's own spiritual journey, of personal search and awakening, and thus it is suggested that the deck be used as intuitively as possible. This is partially why the deck is not recommended for most beginners, however if you think you're up for the challenge, it offers a wonderful learning experience.

A major highlight of this deck: the cards are absolutely *loaded* with imagery, symbolism, puns, and a sense of deeper hidden meaning. I have had these cards for over a year now and I find myself still discovering new perspectives and new meanings that I had never noticed before.

There is a small paper booklet that comes with this deck that includes very brief explanations of the cards, a unique spread layout, and a small blurb on the deck's history.

An instructional paperback book, which explains the meaning of the cards and how to use the deck in depth, can be purchased separately.

Whether your interest in this deck is for serious tarot purposes, or you simply enjoy the vivid artwork, I do believe this deck is a treasure to behold. Also an excellent addition to any collection.

This review is from: Navigators Tarot of the Mystic Sea: 78-Card Deck (Cards)
I have had this deck for over two years but was unable to use it immediately. However, as soon as I did, I found it great to work with. It is pretty straightforward in answering questions with great accuracy and timeliness. I am currently using the deck for my "TAROT card of the day." This deck is fast becoming one of my very favourites.

For beginners, the images and colours in each deck can really help draw out one's intuition. You can explore each card by drawing out your initial thoughts about the imagery. The little white book (LWB) is concise and helpful.

It will also be a delight for those experienced in the TAROT because of the Hermetic and Qabbalistic associations. Collectors must have one. Each card is truly a work of art!
