2.0 out of 5 stars Would not recommend
This was a bit of a disappointment. I watched the DVD once and gave it as a present to a friend. They just give you some basic insight into the BUD without the real thing. The BUD training sessions are just the real basics and the heavy ie. interesting parts are missing (i.e. snipers or exercises with other foreign allied units). Would not recommend.

Along with all the fascinating observations about elite military training, this documentary has to make anyone ask the question; why do some people simply refuse to quit?

Since BUDS is voluntary, a trainee can leave at anytime. How come out of 114, only 16 stay to the end?

Human being generally seem able to take anything when they have no choice. But these guys can go home anytime they want. What makes a select few refuse to even let the idea of quitting enter their mind no matter what the misery?

Perhaps even better than watching these boys push it past the limit of endurance is the simple and direct comments of the instructors on what is happening. These instructors could write a PhD dissertation on human nature and it would be better than most of the garbage that is out there.

It's 5 hours - and you won't be able to look away.

See it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to BUD/S!, October 15, 2007

This 3-disc DVD set is an incredible documentation about military training in an elite force. It gives an insider's look into BUD/S class 234: of the students and of their no-nonsense, hard-core instructors.

BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL) training is the six months of basics, which includes PT phase, diving/water navigation, and weapons. Viewers get a glimps of what it takes to become a Navy SEAL. The cold, the endurance, the self-sacrifice, the will to win and succeed, and the dedication to the team.

My brother-in-law's father was a Navy SEAL, and after watching this documentary, I've gained greater appreciation and understanding of his experience. However, the DVD just shows a snippet of SEAL training. BUD/S is just the beginning!

For any potential SEAL-to-be, this DVD is a must! Also, for the extreme workout (or physical preparation) try: The Complete Guide to Navy Seal Fitness, Third Edition (Includes Free DVD): Updated for Today's Warrior Elite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding, December 23, 2007
This review is from: Navy Seals: Buds Class 234 (DVD)
This dvd suits anyone who is into learning more about U.S military, or for potential future Seals. It covers the 6 months training sailors must go through to become navy seals. Buds ( basic underwater demolition seal training) is considered the hardest military training in the world. This dvd shows you inside of Buds, and it is perfect for individuals who want to become Seals. I consider this to be one of the greatest documentary ever. Hooyah Navy.

This DVD set is great! I started watching it on the Military Channel and bought it!! My Son is in boot camp right now in Great Lakes, getting ready to start Pre-Buds training, all though he read several books on Navy Seals before joining, nothing beats the visuals from watching what it's like for these young men. You also get some insight as to how the instructors view the various personalities of the men. I'm sending it to my son today. I would highly recommend this to anyone considering becoming a Navy Seal as well as to the family and friends of anyone trying to become a Navy Seal. It really helps you get some insight to what these men will go through and the heart and determination they MUST possess to succeed!!

I loved this DVD set and am in awe of the young men who volunteer for the arduous SEAL training program.

This five hour DVD set gives us a snapshot of life in BUD/S training, the first hurdle sailors must clear to become Navy SEALs (BUD/S graduation is followed by SEAL Qualification Training [SQT]). There are three mentally and physically challenging phases in BUD/S training. The first two disks (four episodes) in this set focus on First Phase - physical training and teamwork development - which includes the infamous Hell Week. The third disk (two episodes) shows highlights from Second Phase diving instruction and Third Phase weapons training, underwater demolition, and land warfare tactics. Footage includes interviews with instructors and trainees during and between training evolutions.

I discovered this series after reading Dick Couch's The Warrior Elite: the Forging of SEAL Class 228. Couch is a former SEAL who served in Vietnam. He was given unprecedented access to instructors and trainees as he followed Class 228 through BUD/S. And many of the instructors seen in the DVD are also featured prominently in Couch's book. The result is a far more in-depth look at BUD/S training than you get from the video, but the DVD definitely gives you a sense of the agony these guys must go through; you can see the pain on their faces during the more tortuous evolutions. For those interested in the next round of SEAL training, check out Couch's follow-up book, The Finishing School: Earning the Navy SEAL Trident, which chronicles SEAL Qualification Training or SQT.

If you really want to know what it takes to be a Navy SEAL and what these young men must endure to achieve their goal, I would highly recommend you watch this DVD set (and read the two Dick Couch books as companions).

I absolutely love this DVD set! I bought a second set off Amazon because I lost one disc to the first set I bought from the Discovery Channel store. Having watched the documentary numerous times, there are slight differences between this boxed set and the Discovery Channel set. This one has a little more to it in terms of split screens during interviews and extra footage.

The DVD follows BUDs class 234 on their quest to become Navy Seals. There's nothing more intriguing than watching this group of men go through complete physical hell in order to become America's most elite soldiers. The attrition rate in BUDs is extremely high and, as stated in the video, the ones the make it through are the ones that would rather die than quit. The most amazing thing to watch in the DVD is who makes it through BUDs and who doesn't. Although the training is very rigorous, the challenge to BUDs seems more mental than anything.

The three-disc set follows the BUDs trainees from their first day in training, through hell week, and onto dive training and underwater testing, and finally to land warfare training. While the DVD does a good job showing how rough the first 8 weeks of training are, it spends little time on the underwater and land warfare training. I would've liked to have seen more footage from these last two parts of BUDs and the DVD barely spends an hour on each topic.

I would love to see a follow up on this documentary that focused on Seal Qualification Training, but I doubt the Navy wants our nations enemies to see how our Seals are trained. Overall, this DVD is great for anyone who wants a better idea of what these men go through on the first stage of their journey to becoming Navy Seals!

I purchased this set of videos expecting an old documentary on the Navy SEALS but found it to be both very interested and informative. It definitely looks like one of the old fashioned movies based on the cover and title menu, but I can assure you it it isn't . I watched the first episode of disk one and immediately got sucked in and couldn't stop. It gives a very detailed portrayal of what life is like in the BUD/S training course and takes you through every step of the way. I highly recommend this item if it fits your interests.

I liked their in depth look at the Navy Seals BUDS training, especially the first few weeks of the course including the HELL week. I never knew how high the drop rate was until watching this video. Its a great tactic that they use because alot of the guys that dropped, no offense, come up with all the excuses in the world but in the battlefield there can be no excuses for the grueling intense missions that they must undergo. I wish they showed more about the later parts of it but i am sure its probably top secret like the training on how to blow up and shoot stuff haha
