Book Description

July 6, 2006

The history of 14 different oilers is presented in this book. These ships are displayed in construction plan, photos of compartments in operation, crews doing their duty.

History of each ship covers birth to where they are moored today. The 6 newer Neosho Class Fleet Oilers were streamlined where the stack resembled a cruise ship. Catwalks did not exist, the cargo deck extended from port to starboard as one big open area for replenishment to be carried out on. The 8 older T3 type tankers were Jumboized (cut apart and lengthened) to accommodate the Navy's needs without building new ships.

Oilers usually go out to sea annually for a few months and visit several world ports. This is displayed in maps of the world's oceans, maps of 93 ports, photos taken of those ports by the crew or from the port's local web sites.

Real stories and histories about how things that have happened, either good or bad, one to four pages in length, are included.

This review is from: Navy Super Tankers (Paperback)
If you crewed one of these Navy tankers then buy the book. If not, forget it. I was extremely disappointed in this book - a waste of $$$$$$$$. The volume is a love of labor by one who sailed on this class of Navy tanker and I respect hime for that. The volume is mostly a bunch of ramblings about the tankers, their voyages when the author was in the Navy and the like. Not much to take to the bank here- the book goes downhill after the front cover. Photo reproduction is fair to poor. As a non-Navy veteran I am interested in the various types and classes of auxilary ships and hoped that the book would have indepth chapters and photos of each ship, etc. and a detailed discussion of how these ships performed their mission. Perhaps it does that from the sailors' point of view but to me it is not that type of book and I guess I am at fault for thinking it might be and buying it sight unseen. Any Navy veteran who served on these tankers will probably want a copy. I will be glad to sell them mine.
