Editorial Reviews

Platform:  DVD MOVIE Publisher:  ALPHA VIDEO Packaging:  DVD STYLE BOX Johnny Jersey comes from a tough neighborhood where defying authority is the only rule. He's a pro boxer who hides his real feelings behind the chip on his shoulder and his legendary punch. His sky-rocketing career is stalled when Uncle Sam beckons. Johnny struts through the gates of the Great Lakes Naval Training Station a belligerent and unwilling draftee. Reluctantly Johnny joins the pack of young recruits from America's small towns and big cities sent up for training during WWII. When pretty Naval woman Ellen Sayre catches his eye boot camp starts to look good. The battalion graduates and the men are about to ship out when Johnny proposes marriage to Ellen. She has fallen in love however with Johnny's best friend and fellow cadet Malcolm Randall. Johnny finds out about it and beats his rival to a pulp in a bloody fight. Facing a court-martial Johnny pours his heart out to the chaplain. His pals and Johnny's family rally to try to save him.The teamwork among the recruits is highlighted with comic turns by the supporting cast including Roscoe Karns (It Happened One Night and His Girl Friday) as bumbling ex-shoe salesman Frankie Gimble. A veteran of countless films Robert Lowery is also known for his role as the Caped Crusader in the Columbia serial Batman and Robin. Much of the The Navy Way was shot on location at the US Naval Training Station at Great Lakes Illinois. Starring: Robert Lowery Jean Parker & Robert ArmstrongDirected by: William A. 5.0 out of 5 stars .......WIN WORLD WAR2 [1944], November 26, 2007

This review is from: The Navy Way (DVD)
....Period piece lost to history by now...not a bad production by Pine-Thomas film/makers in co-features a one hour movie before main feature was shown on Saturday's....good looking Robert Lowery does NOT get the top/main billing as colleague Bill Henry gets the nod...he's OK too but never made another impression once the big shots came home from WW2 later...like I said, a rather well done showing the Navy's huge processing center at the Great Lakes Training Center...usual plot...boy likes girl...girl likes boy...then girl jilts him for his wealthy sailor/buddy...not much on laffs but the main theme...THE NAVY WAY...is driven home as boots undergo a nautical crash course on the way into the world's greatest Fleet...for that one reason this movie is a mini-classic for WW2 buffs...Lowery had better parts previous to this movie but he also got lost in the wake of the movie super stars who marched off from Hollywood to come home and took over their grasp where they left off...Henry and Lowery were not the only ones cast aside...as long as the war lasted they had their whirl as heart throbs long forgotten...that's life on the homefront for 4-F-ers then [ 1944]...even Roscoe Karns' role is below his usual standard as a comic relief...the DVD transfer is sort of shadowy dark and volume is low in places, too...Semper Fi....SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF

5.0 out of 5 stars The Navy Way, February 8, 2008

This review is from: The Navy Way (DVD)
I retired from the US Navy some time back after a little over 24 years of service. So many of the Boot Camp scenes were very familiar to me. The movie was like a walk down memory lane. Things have change since then but the pride, the honor and the commitment remains the same. It all starts in Boot Camp! I encourage anybody who wants to know what their uncle did when he first enlisted in the US Navy and went to Boot Camp to see this movie! Some of the characters in the movie I recall from my days in Boot Camp. Then the day all Boots look forward to, yes getting orders to the fleet. A good ship reflects the great men and women that serve on her.So enjoy the movie. Have a great Navy Day!
