Book Description

0299193047 978-0299193041 October 15, 2003 1

What was life like under the Third Reich? What went on between parents and children?  What were the prevailing attitudes about sex, morality, religion? How did workers perceive the effects of the New Order in the workplace? What were the cultural currents—in art, music, science, education, drama, and on the radio?
Professor Mosse’s extensive analysis of Nazi culture—groundbreaking upon its original publication in 1966—is now offered to readers of a new generation. Selections from newspapers, novellas, plays, and diaries as well as the public pronouncements of Nazi leaders, churchmen, and professors describe National Socialism in practice and explore what it meant for the average German.
By recapturing the texture of culture and thought under the Third Reich, Mosse’s work still resonates today—as a document of everyday life in one of history’s darkest eras and as a living memory that reminds us never to forget.

4.0 out of 5 stars A BOOK OF MANY USES .........., May 29, 2009
By
This review is from: Nazi Culture: Intellectual, Cultural, and Social Life in the Third Reich (George L. Mosse Series in Modern European Cultural and Intellectual History) (Paperback)
This is a book of many uses for the student or for just the interested reader. Many books on the shelf concern the history of The Third Reich or World War combats but few concern themselves with the material written inside the Reich before and during the war. Normally one would need seek out memoirs or diaries for that sort of thing, but this book amply supplies various writing from within the Reich by for the most part dedicated Nazis.

The subjects range from the culture itself, to heroes and myths, to racism, to christianity, to whether it is proper for a German woman to have a career or is it more important to have children. Even Adolf Hitler rings in with a speech about that question.

I have the Grosset's Universal Library trade paperback from 1968 which cost a lowly $2.65 at the time. It's good to see this later reprint which will allow a larger, contemporary audience to be privy to the book. For the serious investigator of the Third Reich it is interesting as well as informing to read in translation extracts of the writings of the Third Reich. The book is a keeper.

Semper Fi.

5.0 out of 5 stars A necessary item in every historian's and political theorist's bookshelf, January 16, 2011

This review is from: Nazi Culture: Intellectual, Cultural, and Social Life in the Third Reich (George L. Mosse Series in Modern European Cultural and Intellectual History) (Paperback)
If anyone wishes to understand the rise of dictatorship, the rhetoric of control, or the way that emotions can control the masses, this book is absolutely necessary. "Nazi Culture," uses primary sources written by the Nazi Party themselves during their rise and climax of power. Mosse offers only introductions to the sections, and allows you to be the judge of the articles themselves.

For anyone who wants to avoid fascist elements in a free country, this is a necessity. Don't let a scholar tell you his opinions, use this book to study the texts and become a scholar yourself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Important reading, October 26, 2007
I found this book to be an important read, especially today. Fascism can creep right up on you, and you don't even see it before it's too late. That's what happened to the Germans. That's what can happen again.
