Book Description

The image of the Third Reich as a monolithic state presiding over the brainwashed, fanatical masses, retains a tenacious grip on the general public's imagination. However, a growing body of research on the social history of the Nazi years has revealed the variety and complexity of the relationships between the Nazi regime and the German people. This volume makes this new research accessible to undergraduate and graduate students alike.

Editorial Reviews

Review

David Crew's selection is outstanding. He includes richly detailed and very nuanced articles as well as provocative think pieces painted in broad strokes...The book abounds in significant conflicts, contending voices, and a sense of scholarly responsibility.
–Rudy Koshar, University of Wisconsin

An excellent introduction...The volume brings together some of the most interesting recent research on the Third Reich...It is an invitation to think critically about how to conceptualize the Third Reich...A valuable teaching tool.
–Robert Moeller, The Woodrow Wilson International Center

Organized around a clear theme, with quality essays, this volume embodies what a collection of essays should do: offer new insights, force the reader to think critically about his or her conceptions, and allow for a comprehensive look at a particular subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Understanding National Socialism in Theory and Practice, October 14, 2007

This review is from: Nazism and German Society, 1933-1945 (Rewriting Histories) (Paperback)
The articles in this book allows readers to see the disconnect between the National Socialist ideology and the actual practice with in various groups in society (ie workers, women and families.) National Socialism received wide-spread support based on promises they could not fullfill and subsequently focused on racial issues to divert attention from these unfullfilled promises. Food for thought when looking at current world events.
