4.0 out of 5 stars Good mat and bag, May 5, 2011

This review is from: NcStar Rifle Case Shooting Mat (Sports)
I waited a while before I decided to do a review on this thing. I normally hate it when people do reviews on products the moment UPS drops it off, when its brand new and out of the box. That tells me nothing about a products quality or usability.

Since Ive had this case Ive taken it to a class in Pennsylvania and two separate outings. Before I took it out I sprayed it down with water repellent from KIWI. It fit perfectly inside my Pelican 1750 for transport in the truck.During the class and the range trips I purposely tried to beat it to hell. I yanked on the zippers, dragged it over rocks as I moved position. on the second day it rained heavily the first part of the day, so when we went back to the field in the afternoon I picked a nice wet spot. No problems. At the end of the day I simply took a small hand broom and swept it off, and it was good to go.

All in all it survived, more importantly so did my rifle and optics. The zippers do hang on the corners but i think after a while when its more broken in that will change. I did add two 5.11 pouches to the front to stow my data book ( which didn't fit in either inside pockets, but the fact they are modular and can be removed kinda makes up for that in my book) my rear bag, tools and some other odds and ends. The only thing to that is that anything in those pouches had to be completely removed before deploying it as a mat or it will not lay flat.

I didn't have a chance to use the back pack straps so I cant comment on their comfort. But after looking at them I think I'm going to find an old Oakley pack and use the padded straps from that instead. I may also look at replacing some of the buckles.

To put it short the bag does what it is suppose to and for a pretty decent price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great shooting mat., October 11, 2010

This shooting mat is better than the cold dirt ground. Good construction and zippers with a light PVC coating inside to make it a little water resistant. This will hold AR-15 style rifles, as well as bolt actions. Has storage pockets for extra parts, clear area for picture of target...etc. Fastex style buckles are secure and also allow you to fold this in half for storage. Molle webbing allows you to attach your own pouches and magazine carriers. I rated this a 4 only because it could have been made into a better backpack. The straps are thin and not padded well for backpack use. However, they are flat when stowed. I mostly use this as a rifle case. and it works well for this. Opened up, you can station 2 or 3 rifles nearby for range use. Keeps everything close at hand and off the dirt. Probably will tear if drug over rocks, but good for what it is. Don't pay three times as much for something that gets drug through the dirt anyway. Rifle secures with muzzle sleeve, elastic piece and a button that I use to keep slings stowed. Good case/mat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great case and mat!, December 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Awesome! The quality of this case is top notch. I expect to be using this for years to come. Love how the backpack straps are concealed. Holds my rifle with scope and bipod attached. Everything is very secure. Has a strap to secure rifle. 2 removable pouches. Perfect to use as a shooting mat. I think that it could hold another rifle as well. Again excellent quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I thought it would be, October 18, 2011

This review is from: NcStar Rifle Case Shooting Mat (Sports)
The other posts cover many of the details I'd mention so I'll just say I agree with most. The vendor shipped it out in record time which was nice. On the bag/mat....I've had it out in the dirt and grass. I'm glad I got the camo version instead of black as the grass and dirt stains are not nearly as noticable. There are a number of straps/velcro that I'm not sure what their purpose is, like a lot of tactical gear out there. After a while you can cut them off if they're getting in the way, I've done that with most of my tac gear.

Since it's "sectioned" into three parts I found out the one fold is very good for carrying an extra upper for the AR-15. Very handy. You could use the same space for an extra long gun if you don't mind the weight.

I researched every bag/mat available of similar design and decided on NcStar to provide the best value for the dollar. I am not disappointed and am quite happy with it. I would highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome case / shooting matt, October 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
THis case is awesome! Padded well for rifle protection, may storage compartments. Heavy duty zipper and assembly. I bought a second one after I got the fist. They dont call this waterproof, however the way its built, it could get very wet before it got into the case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised, April 1, 2011
By

This review is from: NcStar Rifle Case Shooting Mat (Sports)
I figured this was a bit expensive for either a rifle case or a shooting mat. When I read it was padded, I expected it to be huge and bulky.

I was pleasantly surprised to open it up and find heavy-duty fabric, zippers, webbing, and decent padding. For all that, it's only about twice the size of a typical rifle case, and it can easily carry two long-guns without them marring eachother. (a padded flap separates the two inside the case) I replaced two gun cases and got a decent shooting mat in the process. Well worth it!

I carry an AR15 (with forward pistol grip and optics) and a 10/22 (With scope) in the case, and could fit another long-gun if I really wanted.(But would need to pad it somehow to keep it from hitting one of the other guns). You could probably cram four, iron-sighted 10/22s in this case if you absolutely needed to. (I won't be carrying more than 2 guns in mine)

There are pockets to tuck the drag and pack straps into where they will stay out of the way. The webbing goes all the way around, but is only Molle compatible on the side opposite the pack straps. It's stitched continuously on the other side.

There is a pocket securing the muzzle, and an elastic cord and buckle securing the buttstock in the case. The padding also secures fairly tightly. Shorter guns won't slide around too much inside the case. (No promises when carried slung over the shoulder or as a backpack. I haven't really used the pack straps)

NcStar has plenty more information on this case at their web page. Amazon won't allow me to link to their page directly. From that page, I learned the intended purpose of a strange flap with a snap on it - it covers a long pocket that I didn't notice, and secures your single-piece cleaning rod.

Ncstar is not a company that is known for quality. This bag is the exception to the rule. It is very well made. It has features that only much higher bags have. Very happy with purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shooting Mat: NcStar, February 27, 2011
By

This shooting mat is a great deal for the price. I would like to see a waist belt added to take a bit of weight off the shoulder straps. The fold out flaps could be just a bit longer. The zipper is a bit tight going around the corners. Of all the mats I looked at, this is still a good deal for the price range.

I had need for a shooting mat this past year and ended up with this one. Lots of features, love the digital camo, price was excellent compared to many others out there at 3 or more times the price.

A Kid's Review
Mine's in digital camo and I've appreciated all the features. Not only a shooting mat but a rifle case with shoulder straps and plenty of attachment points for supplemental gear.
