5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos and charming text
This book will warm the hearts of breastfeeding families everywhere, and perhaps win over some undecided parents-to-be (or some not-so-supportive relatives). The photos are beautiful and natural, and depict breastfeeding in various settings and situations. The text has a great message. Together, the text and photos will have nursing families nodding and smiling at the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Near Mama's Heart a heartfelt tribute to mamas and their nurslings.
Easy-to-read text on brightly colored pages alternate with photographs of nursing babies. Its simple yet engaging prose written from a baby's point-of-view keeps a wee one listening as mommy or daddy read along. And best of all, its depictions span a wide range of breastfeeding mothers, their babies, children and in a way that normalizes breastfeeding and reinforces the...

This book will warm the hearts of breastfeeding families everywhere, and perhaps win over some undecided parents-to-be (or some not-so-supportive relatives). The photos are beautiful and natural, and depict breastfeeding in various settings and situations. The text has a great message. Together, the text and photos will have nursing families nodding and smiling at the familiar scenes. The families in the photos are ethnically diverse, and the little nurslings range from very young to toddlerhood or older. There are a couple of tandem nursing scenes. All in all, this is a welcome addition to the limited number of books available that portray breastfeeding as a normal and positive part of life. It's suitable for children of any age (my 7-year-old son enjoyed it), and adults will find it appealing and affirming.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mother's Day gift- for my kids!, July 15, 2006
This review is from: Near Mama's Heart (Paperback)
I bought this book as a gift for my daughter (almost four) and newborn son on Mother's Day. It was a way to show my daughter how important the nursing relationship I shared with her was, and to share that same bond with my son. It was wonderful, and truly touching, and so very nice to see breastfeeding portrayed so honestly and naturally. BRAVO, Colleen!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly What I've Been Looking For!, July 15, 2006
This review is from: Near Mama's Heart (Paperback)
I love this book! After looking high and low for a children's book for my toddler son about breastfeeding, I was fortunate to finally come across this one. This book has plenty of wonderful real-life pictures of babies and toddlers (from many different ethnic backgrounds) nursing in a wide variety of settings. The text is educational and in simple, very sweet rhymes. My son is now almost 2 years old; he basically weaned himself at a year and a half. Even so, I want him to stay connected to the positive experience we shared. He's also starting to see lots of images of babies being bottle/formula fed and I don't want him to think that's the only/best way or what he and I did. I'm going to get copies for all the new moms I know as well as my friend who is a lactation consultant. My only wish is that this book would come out in a sturdy board book version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! There needs to be more books like this one!, July 15, 2006
This review is from: Near Mama's Heart (Paperback)
My 2 nursing children love this book! The pictures are of children they can relate to, children who are past the baby age and nursing. My son just turned 4 and said to me "Look, they arent drinking from bottles, they are drinking from be-be's (what we call nursing in our family)" and my daughter who is 2 especially loves the pictures of babies/children nursing in slings because "That is how I get my be-be's too"! Our culture is so full of bottles, cribs and strollers that its a rare find for a book to show the more natural methods of nursing, cosleeping and babywearing, a rare find but a welcome one, especially for my children.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new favorite in our house!, July 12, 2006
This review is from: Near Mama's Heart (Paperback)
My 17 month old LOVES this book. Ever since it came in the mail a few weeks ago, we have read it over and over and over again. I never tire of watching him point at the pictures and excitedly say "BABY!" And I'm just thrilled that he's seeing so many babies eating the way God intended - any time, anywhere, right from mama and near mama's heart!

5.0 out of 5 stars We need more books like this one!, July 12, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Near Mama's Heart (Paperback)
As a momma nursing her second son (who has been breastfeeding for 25 months and 4 days but who's counting?!), I found this sweet book to be like a cold glass of vanilla ricemilk is after a chocolate brownie. It satisfied *in me* a craving for more books that reflect our daily experience. We love to nurse, and we are found nursing everywhere from the back yard to the ER and for everything from minor upsets to febrile seizures. My son loved this book and was upset when he couldn't find it (I donated it to our local La Leche League Group) so I am going to buy another copy right now! Thank you for creating such a charming view of nursing from the nursling's vantage point!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book portrays the beauty of breastfeeding, June 20, 2006
This review is from: Near Mama's Heart (Paperback)
This very sweet book highlights the most special aspects of breastfeeding with heartfelt rhymes and touching photographs. "Near Mama's Heart" will be a very special keepsake for my family for years to come (especially since my twins are featured in the book!) and will serve as a reminder of the uniquely close relationship we created through breastfeeding, long after our nursing days are over.
