Biography

An under-recognized pioneer of the lo-fi revolution, Smog was essentially the alias of one Bill Callahan, an enigmatic singer/songwriter whose odd, fractured music neatly epitomized the tenets and excesses of the home-recording boom. Melancholy, poignant, and self-obsessed, Callahan's four-track output offered a peepshow view into an insular world of alienation and inner turmoil, his painfully… Read more in Amazon's Smog Store

Editorial Reviews

The increasingly prolific Bill Callahan returns with the 'Neath the Puke Tree EP, his fourth 2000 release. Over the course of five songs, Callahan revisits Smog songs from the near and distant past and adds two new obsessive tales to his body of work. From the dramatically different version of Sewn to the Sky's "A Jar of Sand" to the subtler remake of the Red Apple Falls gem "I Was a Stranger," Callahan finds room for new interpretations of his material, in much the same way that Chan Marshall did on Cat Power's The Covers Record. New songs such as "Your Sweet Entrance" and "Orion Obscured By Stars" follow in a similar vein to Dongs of Sevotion's sparsest, subtlest moments; they creep up on you and slowly work their way into your brain. Though 'Neath the Puke Tree isn't a revelation in the way that EPs such as Kicking a Couple Around and Burning Kingdom were, its unadorned intensity is nevertheless riveting. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice title huh?, January 23, 2001
This review is from: Neath the Puke Tree Ep (Audio CD)
.. but then again Bill Callahan should be revered for always telling it like it is. The softer, acoustic version of "I Was a Stranger" is unsettling in a beautiful way. Overall this EP is a nice rolling snapshot of rainy day music. Callahan's voice is like the raindrops on a window--soothing in that slightly disturbing way.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting yes, hmm., December 29, 2000

This is a smog at the end of the millenium ep. He is older and more grizzled and sings with a Johnny Cash sexy swagger (i.e. with arrogant soul). He knows his songs are brilliant and he doesn't care. This is not the most carefully crafted selection of songs but the new version of "I was a stranger" is brilliant. Just to hear him sing it with the mental stability the first version lacked is worth the cost. You should buy this if you are interested in his recent albums and because if enjoy watching rain settle into a puddle on the sidewalk.
