Thought-provoking short fiction, December 3, 2000

This review is from: Nebula Award Stories 9 (Hardcover)
This is a collection of about a dozen stories, ranging from novellas to short stories to very short little blurbs. They include the Nebula Award winners for the year of 1973 (novella, novellette, and short story) as well as several runners up and miscellaneous other selections. Authors include the well known (Bova, Ellison, Tiptree) as well as many that have since passed into relative obscurity.
The fiction consists largely of speculative, stylistic, mood pieces of the type usually favored in these awards. Much less technology-oriented, and more artistic, than the typical sci-fi fare, especially in recent years. Several of the stories in this vein are truly outstanding; among these I include "Deathbird" by Harlan Ellison, "Of Mist, and Grass, and Sand" by Vonda McIntyre, and "Love Is the Plan the Plan Is Death" by James Tiptree, Jr. "The Death of Doctor Īsland" by Gene Wolfe is also a classic, although not one of my personal favorites. If any of these stories are unfamiliar to you, this collection is well worth picking up if you happen to run across a used copy.
