2.0 out of 5 stars Not the Best of the Year June 20, 2008
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I mostly agree with the previous reviewer but liked it maybe one star better. I have all the Nebula collections from the first, and this had about the fewest actual stories in it ever. Maybe the editor figured hardcore fans have already read the nominated stories in the magazines, but I read only a few SF collections a year instead to get the cream of the crop. Also, even the Nebula winners included are not that impressive. Try Gardner Dozois's Year Best collection instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Contains essays not stories May 31, 2008
The book's title says "the year's best SF and fantasy" -- but the book really contains essays that are *about* the year's best SF and fantasy. The actual SF and fantasy stories are, with a handful of exceptions, not actually in this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good stories but too few December 28, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
At present the editor of this series changes each year and often the make-up changes as well. This year there are only 6 pieces of prose fiction - the three winners, a short story nominee, a story by grand master winner James Gunn, and an excerpt from Jack McDevitt's winning novel (I think it's just frustrating to put in a few pages - I'd much rather see some other stand alone work by the award winning novelist if something has to be included). While this is a fiction-light edition of the series the fiction that has been included is very strong. There is a wide cross section - Kelly's novella winner is a hard-science fiction, Beagle's high fantasy, while the short stories are both powerful character driven SF stories. I thought Gunn's The Listeners was a bit slow paced but was also a good story.

Most of the articles published I found fairly uninteresting with the exception of Card's about the current state of science fiction.

Overall strong fiction but you can skip about a third of the book.

More About the Author

Mike Allen edits the critically-acclaimed anthology series CLOCKWORK PHOENIX and the long-running magazine MYTHIC DELIRIUM. His newest books include post-apocalyptic dark fantasy novel THE BLACK FIRE CONCERTO and career-spanning poetry collection HUNGRY CONSTELLATIONS.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY gave a starred review to his first collection of short fiction, UNSEAMING, saying the tales therein "deliver solid shivering terror tinged with melancholy sorrow over the fragility of humankind." Laird Barron writes in the book's introduction that the stories in UNSEAMING "rival anything committed to paper by the likes of contemporary masters such as Clive Barker, Ramsey Campbell, or Caitlín Kiernan."

More of Mike's stories have popped up in places like WEIRD TALES, BENEATH CEASELESS SKIES, APEX MAGAZINE, and the anthologies CTHULHU'S REIGN and SOLARIS RISING 2. His poetry has won the Rhysling Award three times, and his fiction has been nominated for the Nebula Award.

By day he works as the arts and culture columnist for the daily newspaper in Roanoke, Va., where he lives with his wife Anita, a goofy dog, and two cats with varying degrees of psychosis. You can follow Mike's exploits as a writer at, as an editor at, and all at once on Twitter at @mythicdelirium.
