More stories, less essays, please!,
By
This review is from: Nebula Awards Showcase 2010 (Paperback)
I have bought all the Nebula Stories collections from the very first. The best ones include as many of the winners and runners-up as possible with maybe a few essays on the state of SF in the past year. This year's volume has only the winners, no runners-up, and a whole slew of essays on this and thst criticism and tributes. Stories are maybe 1/3 of the volume. Next year, more stories and less essays, please (and more cowbell)!

I completely agree with L.B. Guernsey. I recall the first Nebula I picked up years ago and it contained only the great sci-fi stories with, perhaps, a few commentaries. I am wholly disappointed with this year's Nebula book. Why are there not more stories? At the end of the day, the reader will decide which story is the best, regardless of how the committee selected their winners. So, give them to us! Another thing...we live in the age of information. I can travel through space and time with search engines and come across volumes of information regarding sci-fi, how it is written, what were the influences, who were the authors, etc. Please do not make this book turn into a useless compendium of critics notes on what sci-fi is. That is what other books are for. At the end of the day, I hope future editions of the Nebula books capture the stories and authors, as they would have liked, rather than serve as a platform to define the term "science fiction".

Shame,

"Very well." His laugh grated. "The combination that releases the chain is the same as the number of terminal zeros in 4089 factorial."If the hack who wrote this received a Nebula award, things have gone downhill for the once-respected prize, and I'd rather get my reading suggestions from Oprah. A re-printed Harry Harrison story highlights the contrast between the illustrious past and the second-rate present. A rip-off even at five bucks.

Good stories, except the #1 pick,
This review is from: Nebula Awards Showcase 2010 (Paperback)
I was astounded that their #1 pick for best story of the year is so mediocre, formulaic, predictable, and lacking in style. It is fantasy, but if you like good, well-written fantasy, I recommend "The Best Science Fiction & Fantasy 2009 (or 2010)." It's also a MUCH bigger book, making the Nebula book in comparison very expensive for what you get. Though I didn't think I was much of a fantasy fan (due to the kind of fantasy the Nebula writers consider the best), I've enjoyed all the stories so far, both SF and fantasy.
