4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated
Lady of Rage is a great rapper. She can flow and freestyle as well or better than many more well know male and female artists. As mentioned in the other reviews, she was a victim of bad timing. Death Row was in its death throes and as a result this album wasn't marketed well at all. Also, the production was a little lacking a times. If Rage had come out with an album 1...

3.0 out of 5 stars Lyrically Roughness
Here's a really good but overlooked CD from Death Row records. Finally, after almost 5 years, the Lady of Rage finally puts out her debut album. But no one took notice because of the revival of East Coast Rap and most female rappers's lyrics were all about sex & love. The beats are pretty good, but noticeably absent of Dr. Dre. the lyrics are hot and unbeatable. My...

Death Row was in its death throes and as a result this album wasn't marketed well at all. Also, the production was a little lacking a times. If Rage had come out with an album 1 and a half to 2 years earlier, she would have been far more successful. I dont know what she is doing now, but she deserves a proper chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars What happened to her music career?, August 23, 2004
This review is from: Necessary Roughness (Audio CD)
Robin Yvette Allen (Or The Lady Of Rage) has been in the Music business since Dr. Dre released "The Chronic" in 1992. This was her only album. She was one of my favorite female rappers. Where is she now? These days, I only see her on repeats of "The Steve Harvey Show" as Coretta (Thankfully, she is in the best of DVD). What happened to her music career? Did she just quit? She really needs to do another album. Rage, Please drop another album or as Snoop Dogg would say "Rage, would you please drop some Gangsta S***!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Another one of hiphop's elite, July 28, 2006
This review is from: Necessary Roughness (Audio CD)
If The Lady of Rage was promoted right this album might have did a little better than it did. I have a lot of respect for Lady of Rage for staying true to the hiphop culture when the game was populated with rap hookers and clones of rap hookers. Standout tracks: wickedness (original and remix), sho shot, microphone pon cok, rough, rugged and raw, big bad lady, some s--- and the rest of this album. Filler:none. The only flaw of this album is that sometimes her metaphors get repetitive but that doesnt make this album less of a classic. Rage deserves props for not stooping to the mindless raunchiness that made trina and khia famous. This is definetely a hiphop classic worth picking up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timing Was Everything, July 27, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Necessary Roughness (Audio CD)
This classic CD by the Lady of Rage was highly anticipated due to her guest raps with various artists on Death Row Records.

She truly paid her dues to get to the point of releasing her own music, but the label had started its financial free-fall and Necessary Roughness didn't get the backing it needed to receive the industry attention it deserved.

That the raps hold up nearly 10 years after being released says everything one needs to know about Rage. The music came straight from Rage's heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rage come wit da Raw & Wicked flavor, June 1, 2003
By
This review is from: Necessary Roughness (Audio CD)
Rage getz Raw and Wicked on this cd. She flows hard and comes with the tight lyrics, the beatz are tight too. This is another great Deathrow Cd. She's a much better female emcee than Lil' Kim and Foxy. Who knows, maybe The Lady of Rage would have blew up and sold more if Deathrow wasn't going through all it's problems then. She deserves much more credit and hopefully she comes out wit another cd as tight as this one in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definately phat, one of the top 3 female MC's ever..., December 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Necessary Roughness (Audio CD)
Yes, this album tends to lack a little in the production department at times, but Rage's totally wicked lyrics and flow more than make up for it. There is at least 6 absolutely tight tracks here(beats and lyrics) and none of the tracks "suck" Rage is a hypnotizing MC. Nothing you heard before... I wish she got more props, she sure deserves it. I am a true hip hop fan, not just of the commercial ish, and Rage is one of my top emcees. This girl can RAP! All of the tracks concentrate on skills, tight metaphors and similes and flow. No pigeon, chickenhead we all know sex sells stuff(although I do think Lil Kim can flow too.) What Rage needs to do for 2000 is find herself some top notch production that can match her talent. Rage, please don't give up. Forget Death Row, and go girl... keep representing for all the strong, intelligent chicks out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rage, please drop another album soon!, September 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Necessary Roughness (Audio CD)
Rage is a one of the top female rappers, along with Rah-Digga and Queen Latifah. She's a talented lyricist. The song "Big Bad Lady" (with 2Pac!) is off the hook. The only bad thing on this album is the guest appearance by Snoop (who sounds kinda wack) and Daz (who is a talented producer but not a good emcee). Otherwise, I recommend this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best Female Rapper by Far!, April 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Necessary Roughness (Audio CD)
I don't know why this album didn't sell alot of copies because this is a great album. Okay its no "Doggystyle" or "All eyez on Me" but it is one of the best Death Row albums. Maybe the death of Tupac Shakur and Suge Knight being imprisoned affected the sales of this album. Rage was one of the first people to sign for Death Row and she had to wait 5 years for her to get her debut album. Perhaps if they let her release her album earlier then it would have sold well.
