I'm reading these in order, so I'll go back to review Sirens soon.

To put it succinctly, the Shadowfast series is very close to the kind of novels I've been wanting to read for many years. But according to the author, this isn't fiction but memoirs, with the names changed.

For me, the race with the Daytona Charger alone would have made the selling price worth it. With fantastic instincts, very clever driving and an honorary doctorate in BS, our hero in his warmed-over Windsor-powered Mustang makes a contest of a long-distance road race, with a serious disadvantage in both horsepower and aerodynamics. (The 425 HP rating for the stock Hemi was typical factory sandbagging. 480 horses would have been more honest; it could probably put out 425 with one plug wire disconnected. And the Hemi Daytonas could top out at 200 mph from the factory floor.) I can't believe they didn't have any run-ins with John Law. But that's the difference in what it was like to drive then and now, I guess.

Frankly, with 2 & 1/2 of these Shadowfast books under my belt, now, there's little doubt in my mind that these events really happened. Measured by my own experiences, it all rings true--even though this kid got himself into some really hairy predicaments out of an action movie.

Buckle your seatbelts, stow your girlfriend at home and hang on for another wild ride through East Tennessee with Jerry Staute and his buddy Steve. These guys have their hands full in dealing with bomb-laden kidnapping anarchists, gun-toting killers, scorching forest fires and crazy races to Florida and back.

There is no shortage of thrills and spills as these guys (and other friends) throw caution to the winds and push the pedal to the metal. Cars are raced, crashed, fixed and totaled in short order as these wild young men take on trouble head-on at breakneck speed.

Mooneyham shows his great penchant for details in all his work and this one is no exception. While reading of Staute's adventure in the forest fire had me sweating and my throat got so dry, I found myself reaching for a cold Coke.

This book also contains a large and very detailed history and description of Staute's highly modified 1969 Mustang Mach I, Shadowfast. Mooneyham supplies all one would ever need to know to build a supercar of their own - and on a budget to boot.

Good read, lots of action and fun.
