Great Content - Killer Timing!,
By
This review is from: 5 Necessary Skills to Keep Your Career on Track: Negotiate a Job Offer, Interview Questions, Career Changes, Job Searches, Cover Letters, Resume, Being Proactive, Dealing With Bad Managers, Networking (Paperback)
This book couldn't of come at a better time for me! Let me start at the beginning, I lost my job and was sent a copy of this long titled book by my close friend. By just using the networking section, I had not one, but TWO interviews in the next week, applying the techniques in the book resulted in two offers in these "tumultuous times". These 5 skills not only helped in the search process but I am starting to apply them to my new job and my boss told me I am exceeding his expectations. I am taking my friend that bought me the book to the mountains this weekend for not only getting over the depression of being fired, but helping me to jump start my career again! The information in this book is worth many times the cover price if you apply one of the essential skills. I don't give 5 stars easily (only 1 other 5 star review so far!) as I want them to mean something in my reviews, but here they are deserved. Apply these techniques and you will get rid of the fear of losing your job... (or finding a job in my case ;-) Keep fighting the good fight!

Well written with real world anecdotes and practical advice which makes this book a quick read and well worth the money spent. The "5 necessary skills" detailed are excellent tools needed for those just entering the workplace as well as good reminders for those who've been around a while. I liked that Pearson didn't drone on like some job hunting books do, but rather got to the point fairly quickly about why each skill is necessary and how they will aid you in today's ever-challenging job market.

Richard S. Pearson offers his readers an excellent resource with this book. 5 Necessary Skills brilliantly organizes a comprehensive, yet succinct, model for every business professional - working or not - who may be in search of the right employment fit, or even making a current job more fulfilling. It is a user-friendly guide, replete with practical tips and examples to help anyone trump the odds of making it in these troubled economic times. Positive, realistic, timely. I would enthusiastically encourage its reading and would think it should be mandatory for students about to enter the workforce.

My company laid off 20% of its workforce this year, so I'm nervous. This book gave me valuable tips so instead of waiting around and being stressed that I'm next, I can now apply my learnings to do things that make me more valuable in my current role and prepare me should the bad news come. I read this in two quick hours and feel so much better having some solid ideas of how I can proactively move my career along. Great networking examples!

I had been employed for most of my long life and many of the concepts illuminated in this fascinating little book I have experienced personally at one time or another. The value and beauty of...."5 Necessary Skills" is the skill and clarity in which they have been presented again and brought from the subliminal into consciousness. This is truly a vital read for anyone seeking OR holding employment at this particular turn in our stressed economy. You will not be disappointed in Mr. Pearson's latest offering that has been extracted from his many and varied experiences in the corporate world.

Having lost my job last month, I am interviewing for the first time in years. I didn't even have an up to date resume! This book walked me through how to write an effective resume and how to grab attention with a great cover letter. It must have worked because I have two interviews next week. Now I need to focus on strengthening my interview skills (Chapter 13). This book will be a great guide for anyone looking for a job in this crazy environment!

Interesting and relevant content with real life examples that I could relate to. In fact, I recognize that some of Mr. Pearson's examples are so familiar that I kept reading till the end. He combines his personal experience and research, and then grabs your attention, because he provides important observations and advice... Highly recommend, especially since most of us are so vulnerable, it helps to be prepared for changes in life, as well as career.
