Killer!, March 17, 2003
I was pleasantly surprised when I picked this one up. Usurper plays raw, thrash/death metal in the vein of bands such as Celtic Frost and Slaughter (the Canadian thrash band). It comes as no surprise that they cover Slaughter's "Tales of the Macabre" on this album. Excellent vocals, with lots of raw screams and grunting (a la Tom Warrior). There are some heavy grooves thrown in with the thrashing, but they are well-placed, and the album never slows down long enough to let the listener down. Really good stuff for fans of the old school days when certain thrash bands were slowly evolving into modern death metal. Kind Diamond even does guest vocals on one track!
