5.0 out of 5 stars Under Overkill's Wheels!
Disregard anyone who tries to tell you that Overkill has lost its teeth or gone soft. This disk will crush you with sheer aggression and raised-middle-finger attitude. Disregard anyone who tries to tell you that Overkill has lost its teeth or gone soft. This disk will crush you with sheer aggression and raised-middle-finger attitude. The riffs are delivered with depleated uranium weight, and the production is clean and loud. Just to give you a little to think about, the boys have given us some pretty interesting choruses, and even a little female backing vocal here and there. Don't let this disuade you. Compared with their contemporaries, Overkill has remained far faster and harder. They don't have the hammer down every second, but when the throw you the heat, they can still shift into maximum overdrive. Get this disk. Get W.F.O. and Years of Decay, too. Heck, get them all! They'll put an end to any urge to lament over the lack of quality Thrash these days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still going strong after all these years., February 27, 2001
By
This review is from: Necroshine (Audio CD)
I remember when I first heard "the years of decay" I was blown away. It's rare that you find a thrash band who are also able to put some melody in their music. For a long time these guys were second only to Metallica for me but through the passing years Metallica have managed to sound like everyone else. The thing that I used to love about Metallica was that despite the fact that they had no air play, they continued to fight the mainstream and achieved fame the hard way: they worked their butts off. Now ten years later and millions of albums sold they've become the exact thing that they were railing against in the first place.

Well that left me with Overkill. They've never compromised their sound for sales. They've stuck with what they're best at: teeth rattling metal. Another thing I love about these guys is that they're not lazy. From 1999 to 2000 they've put out 3 albums (Necroshine, Coverkill, and Blood letting).

Necroshine is a great cd. They rock harder than ever on this thing. There's not a bad song in the whole bunch. Blitz's vocals are definately unique but on this album he knocked it up a notch. He's more nuanced than ever. The rest of the band are tighter than ever and compliment Blitz's vocals perfectly. Check out "Necroshine"....

5.0 out of 5 stars THRASH AT IT'S FINEST, December 23, 1999
By
This review is from: Necroshine (Audio CD)
Well, at the beginning of the decade they released their best album Horrorscope. Now to conclude the decade, they release their best yet. Necroshine is Overkill's masterpiece, no two ways about it. Every song on here maintains it's thrash-ness while Blitz and the Wrecking Crew add some melody to the songs. The result, a classic. This band has really some retread, rehashed thrash over the course of this decade, and it is a pleasure to hear this. I've stuck by them since Wreck Your Neck, and I would have never given up on them because I knew they have potential for greatness. Fans of metal, Metallica has gone out of the thrash realm, and if you think thrash is dead, pick this up and behold NECROSHINE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Necroshine: Another instant classic., March 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Necroshine (Audio CD)
Overkill is back and blazing in 1999 with "Necroshine", a heavy piece of work. As Overkill continues through the years and into the next millenium, one would think they might slow down. Never fear- they haven't. In fact they've turned it up a notch. Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth describes the sound as "somewhere between the Rolling Stones and the apocalypse." Indeed! The title cut pummels the listener with intensity and the album doesn't let loose with its grip until the last note on the last song is played. Tim Mallare slaps the skins with a brutal viciousness and the rest of the band won't let you forget that they are truly a metal band. No filler here. Time to race out and scoop this one up, it doesn't disappoint!

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worthwhile, as per usual, December 5, 2005

If you don't have any Overkill as of yet and happen to be reading this I ougtha tell ya that there are about a half a dozen Overkill cds you need to check out before you look at this one. And seriously, be sure to do this. Overkill are pretty well known and all but aren't nearly as prominent as they ought to be. First of all 'The Years of Decay' and 'Horrorscope' are just utter thrash classics, easily worthy of being mentioned along side all the bigger titles in the genre, and superior to a goodly number of them, as a matter of fact. Second of all, metal are fans are always such of fickle bunch, accusing whoever of selling out or going soft, usually without good reason. No such accusations can be leveled towards Overkill, and it seems like they should get more recognition for this fact. Sure, most people out there probably don't need every Overkill albums, but you definitely at least need to check the band out in general. (And I like em all.)

'Necroshine' is in the middle of the pack as far as the whole 'kill catalogue is considered. Not innovative or anything, but well written and performed, solid production. It comes between 'From the Underground and Below' and 'Bloodletting' and does sound like middle ground between those albums. A bit darker, less bluesy than the former, but still groovier and less thrashy than the latter. It's far from being a pure thrash album, make no mistake, but it's not remotely trendy and it's definitely very Overkill-y.

'Let Us Prey' is easily the best song here. Fairly epic, great chorus. The title track is another fine one, with a nice venomous vocal performance from Blitz and a great riff underneath the chorus. '80 Cycles' is a bit more of a groover, very memorable though. 'Forked Tongue Kiss' and 'I Am Fear' are both fast, chaotic pieces. The latter has another great, unhinged vocal performance from Blitz. 'Black Line' is probably the most immediately memorable and most overtly melodic track here. Excellent gang vox too. As usual there are no bad tracks on this album, though the quality isn't extraordinary in general. Still, it's got enough very good too excellent tracks to keep it from being to middle of the road.

Yeah I'm done. Overkill are the most consistent metal band around, and this album is definitely worthwhile for their serious fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much better than I expected..., February 16, 2011

This review is from: Necroshine (Audio CD)
I used to be into Overkill in the late-80s, thru "The Years of Decay", but eventually I tired of the vocals so I got rid of all of my Overkill CDs.

I have since re-purchased "The Years of Decay" and still listen to that one from time-to-time for nostalgia. I decided to take a chance on a more recent Overkill release and randomly picked "Necroshine". Well, I still think that Blitz is a bad vocalist, but the production on this album is excellent. Much better than their 80s stuff.

I like the opening track "Necroshine"; excellent intro - this song has a very prog metal feel to it. The opening riff of "My December" sounds like something from Pantera, and overall this is a good song. "80 Cycles" is great, maybe the best song on the album, and one of the few songs where Blitz's vocal style does not grate on my nerves.

"Let us Prey", "Revelation", "Stone Cold Jesus", and "Forked Tongue Kiss" are solid tunes. "I Am Fear" has a great intro riff. The other songs are decent too, but they don't really stand out.

I was pleasantly surprised by this album. It far exceeded my expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrash at its best, November 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Necroshine (Audio CD)
Who is that guy that said Over Kill has taken the alternative route? Over Kill is one of the only thrash bands from the old school days that is still true to the scene. Sure, there are a few parts of this cd where they're doing a little exploring, but in no way, shape, or form, have they gone the way of Megadeth or Metallica. This cd is a great thrash cd, maybe their best since Feel The Fire and Taking Over. If you're a fan bands like Agent Steel, Sacred Reich, Exciter, or just about any of the original thrash, check out this cd. If they have changed, they've only got heavier.

Thank God for bands like Overkill, Anthrax, Iron Maiden, Slayer ect... they won't sell out and become a mockery of metal. This album is not only up to par--it exceeds expectation!

Nothing more to really say but this is a great CD by Overkill. Metal is here to stay - this proves it (along with Iron Maiden getting back together!) Anyway, the music & lyrics are great. Buy it - You'll like it. Very powerful. I think it's the best thing the band has ever put out.
