5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have., December 14, 1999
This review is from: Nectar (Audio CD)
The music on this cd is delightfully refreshing. A collection of traditional eastern european songs that are each unique and unforgettable, sung in amazing crisp, clean harmony. One does not need to know the languages to enjoy the marvelous harmonies produced by the collection of women singers. An extraordinary cd to listen to at work, in the car, or at home, just to relax to and think. (My favorite track is #13, Shto Mi E Milo from Macedonia, an up beat folk dance tune that you cannot help but stop what you are doing to listen to it and enjoy).

5.0 out of 5 stars Kitka satisfies a woman's soul, March 25, 2000

The first album by Kitka is quite simply, wonderful. The close harmonies and the beauty of the women's voices is moving and deeply satisfying to the ear. I heard an intriguing PBS radio program about a year ago interviewing some of the performers and playing exerpts, as I was driving through Oakland, CA in a rental car. The music has a mysterious, joyful, celebratory and profound quality. It was one of those memorable programs that inspired me to go out and buy, and I haven't been disapointed at all. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the choral quality and melodic dissonance of Enigma or Enya. You won't be disappointed by choosing any of Kitka's music!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just some additional info..., June 11, 2000

A very good album; I won't repeat the other reviews. For those who are interested, though, I thought I'd point out that (at the moment, at least) Amazon's discography is not complete. This album is Kitka's most recent (and perhaps best). "Voices on the Eastern Wind" and the other two albums that preceded it are available elsewhere. Their web site (kitka.org) has further info on recordings, concerts, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music for any music lover, July 12, 2000

After hearing Kitka on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion a while back, I couldn't resist the urge to buy this CD. Kitka's music talents are truly amazing -- they are able to bring life to music that has been distant from our ears for many generations. After hearing Kitka sing their eastern European specialities, I can only wonder why we haven't enjoyed music from that tradition before now, as it is truly phenomenal. Kitka's performance, always flawless, opens this somewhat rare genre to the "Western" ear in an extremely pleasant and enjoyable way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable, simply remarkable, May 26, 2000

There is something so fundamentally stirring about these voices, that it stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it. Enchanting, enegmatic and very powerful. This isn't background music (not that any good music deserves to be) and will pretty much command your full attention (you're not going to have much choice).

People may be familiar with Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares, but these songs and singers are more accessible and, in this listeners opinion, more beautiful. Belongs in any good world music collection.

I, too, heard Kitka perform on Prairie Home Companion, while driving alone in my car. When they finished, I audibly (and loudly) exclaimed, "Wow!" ... this coming from a mid-40's male rock-n-roller! The minute I walked in my front door, I ordered this CD. Addictive melodies, tight, soaring harmonies ... what a beautiful, moving experience.

This CD displays the lushness of feminine Slavic harmony. It is soothing, hypnotic and sometimes challenging with its occasional whoops and hollers. the liner notes give a nice summary of the songs; would be nice to read the actual lyrics, though.

It's refreshing to know that singers in America can produce these sounds. Keep it up, Kitka!

...every time I listen to it, and I try not to say cheezy-sounding things like that too often. I don't know how to put my love for these songs into words. It's like... oh, how do I describe this? Pure, beautiful, skin-tingling passion. My words are inadequate, but it's as close as I can get to what I'd like to say.

If I could make a wish and have any person or group of persons materialize at my bedside and sing me to sleep, it would be Kitka. Their music is so beautiful that there are no words. It is only to be experienced. So get it for yourself. Let this astounding music wash over you.
