This review is from: St. Nectarios of Aegina (Modern orthodox saints) (Paperback)
For the most part I really enjoyed this book, but Cavarnos' introduction is way too long in my opinion (about 70 or 80 pages of a 200 page tome.) Most of that introduction (and a good chunk of another part of the book) is spent cataloguing and describing St. Nectarios' writings. While I know St. Nectarios was an incredibly prolific and profound writer, I'm more interested in the writings themselves than reading ABOUT the writings. There is some nice stuff at the end that provides excerpts from several of his works, but I felt that overall too much time is devoted to merely talking about the works. There is also a splendid brief little section on some of the miracles performed by St. Nectarios. Needless to say the "three-star" rating is for this book, and not for my thoughts of St. Nectarios, who I hold in highest regard. I know there are some other works on St. Nectarios out there, but haven't read any of them. I also recommend the rest of Dr. Cavarnos' "Modern Orthodox Saints" series (of which this is Volume 7.) The one on St. Cosmas of Aitolos is particularly fantastic! |
