4.0 out of 5 stars A Classic Game for the Turbo Grafix Given New Life
Of course, probably no one can remember that system, however if they can one of the best strategy games ever made (for it or any other system in my opinion) was Military Madness, and it is now revived on the playstation with new battle graphics and about a hundred more missions. This game is quite old, I first played it on Turbo Graphix 16 back in the day. The Playstation port plays much like that version plus many new levels. The 3D animations are cool, but if you're serious about the game you'll soon turn them off because they take too long.

Fans of the original turned-based strategy game (which was similar to a very simple version of Panzer General) will cherish this so add a star. Other who are new to it will boo and hiss the map graphics (which are exactly the same as the old game) however the gameplay is still addictive and fast compared to most turn-based strategy games which helps to keep you involved. A solid game for the strategy game enthusiast.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Old Game, But So What, March 20, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Nectaris: Military Madness (Video Game)
This game is entertaining, challenging, and occasionally frustrating without total offering total discouragement. The graphics may be dated but they're far from being the worst, even by today's standards. And it doesn't require super-human reflexes, double-jointed suppleness, light-speed keyboard or controller action, or any other manner of superlative manual dexterity. Good for the very young...older, and very old. I'll be able to play this as long as I can see.

Aggressively ATTACK! Defend and attrit; gain air supremacy, contain and destroy. The options are varied.

I'd love to get hold of a similar game that offers sea battles as venues. Should any soul possessed of nastalgia wander through who can recommend such a title, please do.

5.0 out of 5 stars MILITAR MADNESS RETURNS!!!, February 5, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

This review is from: Nectaris: Military Madness (Video Game)
I have been playing Military Madness for the past 15 years. I played it on the TG16, on the pc, on my cell phone, etc. Just realized they made a sequel for the ps1, and here it is. Granted, I had to shell out some $ because it's a ps1 game, and I had to play it through my ps2 on my hi-def tv soI knew the picture would be terrible, and it is! But who cares!?!

The terrain looks like it is blurry, like you need 3d glasses or something, but I have my ps2 upconverted through my receiver anyhow.
This game was of course meant to be played with the ps1 console on a tube tv.

Same vehicles, SAME AI, same objective. However, you can save your game at any point in the game (This is huge). There are a ridiculous amount of maps, over 100 I think. You can also change the battle animations. You can have the classic view, there is a new 3d view where you see the tanks and aircraft fly around in different views when they attack each other, or you can turn it off like I do because the battle sequences take too long and the 3-d views looks hideous. You can create your own maps and play them with a friend or the computer AI.

The AI is the same. However the scenarios seem a bit more challenging, which is good because I have been playing the last 32 maps every which way for the past 15 years! Its nice to have some change!

The biggest difference veterans will notice will be the appearance of the terrain, but this is easily overlooked.

Hudson just made a new sequal to MM on Verizon cellphones with new vehicles maps, everything, that's pretty wicked too!

3.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites of all time, with some major flaws., August 19, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Nectaris: Military Madness (Video Game)
This game is quite old, I first played it on Turbo Graphix 16 back in the day. The Playstation port plays much like that version plus many new levels. The 3D animations are cool, but if you're serious about the game you'll soon turn them off because they take too long.

I have two complaints about this version:

1. The English language names of the units were established by the Turbo Graphix 16 version years prior. This version ignored some of those names and arbitrarily renamed the units, to top it off all future English language releases of the game still use the old Turbo Graphix versions making this one stand alone in that respect. It sure makes it hard to explain things to your friends when you're up against an ingrained name barrier that they don't have.

2. The "dice rolls" are heavily weighted towards the AI. Many of the scenarios are supposed to be heavily weighted against you, the AI has better vehicles, better initial deployment, more units etc... I have no problem with this, however when I have a Falcon with 4 stars fresh from a factory rebuild and it faces a Hunter with no stars straight out of a freshly captured factory I shouldn't be left with no Falcons or just one while the AI loses just one or none three out of four times. This sort of dice weighting does cause you to improve your strategy a little, but it increases frustration a lot where it shouldn't. The Android version addresses the dice weighting issue, only it completely turns the AI into a doofus.

I accidentally bought this thinking it was the latest version for PS3, but it's not. It's the same old version from 1989 that I used to love but no longer love. There is a newer version of this game by the exact same name (Nectaris Military Madness) for the PS3. Apparently you can only buy it thru the Playstation Store. It was released in November 2009 and I've only played the free demo, but it is a greatly updated version with much better graphics, sound, etc. Not sure why Amazon doesn't have it.

i have a working NEC TurboDuo with a rare Neo-Nectaris disc. i would still play this 15 year-old system with relish just for this game, but i knew that Playstation had another version of Nectaris. i waited until very recently when the PS2 price dropped to get that system, and then got a copy of Nectaris.

i've played through 10 levels -it is JUST like the original NEC version. With the same semi-predictable AI, it is STILL a lot of fun, especially for us old-heads. unfortunately, this game has NONE of the biomech monsters found in the NEC TurboDuo CD-rom version. but it DOES have the entire old Military Madness game embedded on the disc. the game moves nicely when you turn off the 3D battle graphics.

with poor online reviews for the Wii version, this is a GREAT version to own if you need more Madness (and don't want to own a Turbo Duo and Neo-Nectaris).

please note that the lone poor Amazon review of the game was by someone who apparently knew nothing about hex-surrounding strategy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disgruntled, August 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Nectaris: Military Madness (Video Game)
!st off, the graphics are alright. I do like the unique battle advantage scenarios that are taken into account based on number of troops, type, experience, etc. etc. However the flaw that ticks me off is this. No matter the scenario, (ex. 5 troops vs. 2) the computer always does maximum damage while you (the player) always do minimum damage. The odds could be overwhelming in your favor, and the computer would still win. Aside from that the game was alright.
