5.0 out of 5 stars About time! May 16, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is one of those overlooked gems that fans have been screaming about for years. The "missing piece" in the Asylum puzzle is finally available, thanks to Collectors Choice. Although Doheny is often linked to Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther and the Eagles, he has a unique style that crosses from folk to jazz to country-rock. Even though "On And On" was orginally recorded by Dave Mason and Cass Elliot, Doheny provides a personal stamp thanks, in part, to the harmony vocals of Graham Nash. I have been waiting for this for a long time and it's like seeing an old friend. If you have any doubts, Ned Doheny says it all with the song "Trust Me". An amazing singer, songwriter and guitarist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cross off another one October 29, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Well, cross another one off the list of albums that I never thought I'd see on CD. This album was so hard to find in the 70's that I had to special order it direct from Asylum Records. If you've read any of the books out there about California Rock and life in Laurel Canyon in the late 60's and early 70's you've heard Ned's name. Despite having all the right friends and writing some great songs fame and fortune never really happened for him the way it did for some of his drinking buddies. However along with Judee Sill he may be the best Califormia musician of the time that you've never heard of.

In my opinion time has been kinder to this album than his more overtly blue-eyed soul influenced records of the late 70's (although that influence is here as well). The tracks percolate with acoustic guitar driven energy and meticulous production. Highlights for me are "On and On", which was covered by Dave Mason, and the acoustic soul of "I Know Sorrow".

This is a great lost gem well worth discovering. Again, I can't believe I own it on a CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very welcome reissue August 6, 2009
Format:Audio CD
The re-release of Ned Doheny's 1973 self-titled debut album is great news. Ned Doheny is a major talent, but this seems to have been recognised only in Japan, where his albums have been available throughout. (It might be worth adding that a Japanese re-release is impending, and may be in SHMCD format).

Ned Doheny's music was very much ahead of its time, blending a West Coast feel with distinctly funky overtones. Doheny, along with Jackson Browne and the Eagles, was one of the first artists to sign for Asylum, but did not achieve commercial success on the same scale - this is a pity, because the music is outstandingly good.

Stand-out tracks include "Fineline" and "Laschambeaux", but there isn't a weak track on the album. Previously, copies of this album on CD commanded three-figure sums, and this is likely to be a limited issue, so buy it now if you like the sound of it.

If you like this one - and I can't think why anyone wouldn't - then your next purchases should be "Prone", "Hard Candy" and "Life After Romance", in that order.

Please note: there is now a Japanese SHM-quality pressing of this CD and, as you would expect, it's even better than the 'standard' version.
