Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1—Ned is a good-natured worm that loves apple pie and the color red. For him, living in an apple is ideal, until the inevitable happens and his home begins to decompose. When the walls turn mushy, apple juice rains every day, and the bathtub begins to float, Ned knows it's time to search for a new abode. He tries out several different fruits: a pear is too wobbly, a lemon is too sour for his friends' tastes, and a pile of blueberries doesn't hold together. While perched in a bowl of cherries and busy designing a house, a bird lifts Ned—cherry and all—into the sky. Grasping an umbrella, he gentle glides down until he lands in a tree where he finds the perfect new home, an apple still on the branch. The cartoon illustrations are filled with warm colors and comic touches. Endpapers depict the life cycle of the apple from seed to fruit and back to seed. This reassuring tale will be appreciated by the read-aloud crowd while also supplying a subtle lesson in ecology.—Laura Butler, Mount Laurel Library, NJ END

Tseng’s debut picture book is full of tongue-in-cheek humor. His watercolors have just the right touch of whimsy—full of humor and expression yet at the same time simple enough for the youngest listeners. Ned is a worm that is sure to be welcomed into children’s homes, no matter what kind of material they might be made of.—Kirkus Reviews

This book can be so interactive. I took my niece to the Farmers Market and she tried to pick a new home for Ned. Understanding shapes, sizes and fruits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ned For President!!, January 20, 2011
This review is from: Ned's New Home (Hardcover)
I borrowed Ned's New Home from our local public library for my almost 4 year old daughter. From the stack of books that we read every night, she always chooses to read Ned first. The other day when we were driving down the road, she was talking about Ned.
This is a simple, but great, book to explore fruits and colors with your child. Perfect for toddlers or preschoolers. Thanks for writing an excellent book for kids, Kevin!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an adorable little book that your preschooler will ask you to read time and time again!, January 2, 2010
This review is from: Ned's New Home (Hardcover)
You could see right past the yellow shutters into Ned's home. Ned, a beautiful green worm, had just baked an apple pie that had steam rising from the top. An apple home was just perfect for someone like him and to round off the coziness of the place he even had red curtains in the window and a nice potted plant in the yard. It was a wonderful home until "the apple started to rot." Ned looked a little anxious and even had to get out an umbrella when "the walls turned to mush, and apple juice rained every day." It was time to find a new home when the tub began to float.

Suitcase in hand, Ned began his search. A pear looked just fine, but it kept wobbling and throwing him out. "Humph!" The watermelon was a bit too BIG and those blueberries just rolled all over the place when he tried to erect a wall. When he spotted a lemon that seemed to be just right. He even had two potted plants outside his doorway, but when his friends tasted his lemon tarts it was time for a move. He tried a kiwi, but ladybug, snail and his ant friend couldn't find him because he blended in with the walls. Ned was planning his next house in a bowl of cherries when a bird swooped down and grabbed the cherry his was sitting on. Was Ned ever going to find a home as good as his first one?

This is an adorable little book that your preschooler will ask you to read time and time again. I enjoyed Ned's little search for a home, but each time he thought he had the perfect one there was always something that didn't quite work out. It reminded me a bit of the saying, "there's no place like home." Ned wasn't going to be content until he was in a home that was just right for him. If you live in apple country this would be a nice choice for circle or story time in the homeschool or classroom setting!
