A Nice Little Book -- a review of "I Need Glasses",
This review is from: I Need Glasses (Rookie Reader: Compound Words) (Library Binding)
This is a nice little book that works on a number of levels. For one, it helps children understand why they need glasses. The little girl in the story needs glasses to see during the daytime. She also needs them to see starlight with a telescope, to write letters to her friends, to draw, and finally, to read stories to her little brother.
As a reader the book is fairly simple with 53 words. Examples: and, are, help, between, brother, glasses, night, next, need, friends, stories, them, want and where. Harder words include: baseball, basketball, bathtub, bedtime, starlight , leave and write. Despite the fact that there are compound words (baseball, etc.) early readers can probably do well. My daughter (5.5 yo) certainly did okay. And because of the frequent refrain of "Where are my glasses", even younger children can pretend and practice that they are reading. Finally I think it is nice that after all the searching for the missing glasses -in the bathroom, the bedroom, etc.-that the little girl finds her little brother wearing them while he is pretending to read. (He looks to be a preschooler.) Four Stars. Good read-aloud that "rookie" readers can read themselves - with or without help. I like that the book puts a positive spin on wearing glasses, and that the little girl ends up reading to her little brother. Artwork is so-so. |
