Chilling and Great,
By A Customer
This review is from: Need (Mass Market Paperback)
I came across Need looking for a different book also called Need. Even though it wasn't the book I was looking for, I bought it anyway. It's amazing. It's not a "feel good" novel, that's for sure. But it's great and so well written. I looked for more books by the author, but there's only one and it's out of print. I hope he writes more books.

Clever and Intriguing,

This review is from: Need (Mass Market Paperback)
I throughly enjoyed reading "Need". This was my first time running across Lawrence David. He is a gripping author, who makes you relate if you like it or not. I recommend this novel to anyone looking for a work worth the time. I don't think you'll be dissapointed.

The genius is in the details,
By A Customer
This review is from: Need : A Novel (Hardcover)
Need is at once tiny and vast. It is through the smallest of details that author Lawrence David allows the reader to not simply witness, but truly enter, the large and fascinating world of psychotherapy and love gone wrong. So much of life is made up of the very small. And this is exactly the strength of this powerful novel. This is what makes Need sometimes disturbing, sometimes funny, sometimes painful and always very human. Need is emotionally expansive and honest. It's eccentric; and yet at its core is someone trying to be so very, very normal. Need is a page-turner; a book you begin before bed and lose a night's sleep over. Need, in all its detail, is nothing less than brilliant. I look forward to more from this gifted writer.

This is not literature,
By A Customer
This review is from: Need : A Novel (Hardcover)
Need is a good book. What David does so well is give real insight into the emotions of jealousy, anger, and the desire for revenge. That is the most impressive part of the novel. David also captures details wonderfully - occasionally too wonderfully. At points, it seems as though the novel gets bogged down in details which are unnecessary and there are places that could definitely be edited. What is worthwhile about this novel is that it is human. This actually shows what humans are capable of if driven to the edges of sanity. It shows the human capacity to manipulate others in order to help ourselves. Like I said, this is not literature but it is psychologically fascinating and a good novel

So thought-provoking,

I happened to find this in my library book sale shelf, and had never heard of this book. After reading Amazon reviews, I deducted it was a "dark drama" and decided to read it. I loved most of Oprah's book club books - dark, heavy dramas and this book fits right into this. I finished it a week ago and still can't stop thinking about the characters, they were so realistic. I am not employed in the psychology field, so it seems to me, as a "layperson" that the situations and responses were very real. This isn't a light novel, but deals with heavy issues of depression, marriage problems, suicide and loneliness. Very very intriguing. p.s. I did find Lawrence David's other book "Family Values" in my library, and Mr. David, if you see my review, please write, I'd like to ask some questions - it also was intriguing, but some of the family's behaviors didn't make sense. Havn't read as good of a book since this one,
By A Customer
This review is from: Need (Mass Market Paperback)
I could not put this book down! I read it originally in 1995 and read it again in 1999. I've had a hard time finding a book as good as this one since I first read it! I'm online now hoping to find another book by this same author-- but I've only found one. You will not be disappointed with this book! It would make a great book club book!

interesting plotline bogged doen by excessive detail,
By A Customer
This review is from: Need : A Novel (Hardcover)
an interesting plotline that is bogged down by an obsessive-compulsive use of detailed description. For instance, the author went into agonizing detail about a flashing vcr clock. I wanted to scream at the author: "get on with the story!" This book would be a great tool for an English teacher to use to use to teach students to embellish their writing.Furthermore, about halfway through the book, I began to lose sympathy for and interest in the "three blind mice" |
