Editorial Reviews

"A touchingly personal affair, eschewing Thrush Hermit's riff-rock grit for solemn, downtempo ballads that ruminate on love, death and loss with a magnificent, unvarnished beauty recalling John Lennon, Wilco and Randy Newman. It's a bitterweet pill that holds the cure for what ails you." -- Daryl Sterdan, Winnipeg Sun

On its own terms, Thrush Hermit kingpin Plaskett's first solo excursion is a refreshingly heartfelt counterpoint to the cheesy riff-rawk posturing of his day gig. But in light of his recent blood-related illness -- serious enough to force cancellation of the Thrushies' farewell tour -- these lonesome hurtin' songs resonate with even greater poignancy. The titles alone read like an obituary ("Goodbye, World," "The News of Your Son"), and the sense of despair is heightened by Plaskett's evocations of spirits both dead (Gram Parsons) and undead (Neil Young, Will Oldham). But no matter how bleak it all seems, Plaskett's warm, folksy croon offers assurance that he'll be around for the next sunrise -- and, hopefully, more albums as good as this one." -- Eye Weekly

Plaskett is a star. Needle-thin and with tousled brown hair, he spends 30 minutes blinking into the spotlight as he plucks his way through his ultra-fragile highway blues. His between-song banter resembles the sweet surrealism of The Flaming Lips Wayne Coyne; his actual songs (Id Rather Be Deadly Than Dead, Goodbye, Doctor) sound like the third Big Star Album. His debut release, In Need Of Medical Attention, is a concept album about doctors. Try to find it. -- NME

Product Description

Former Thrush Hermit frontman steps out on his own. Quite a departure from the harder-edged Thrush Hermit sound, "In Need Of Medical Attention" was recorded over the course of two years and is interspered with incredibly personal themes. This album is a real showcase for Joel's immense talent and songwriting ability.

4.0 out of 5 stars joel steps out of the shadow of the hermit June 18, 2000
Format:Audio CD
"in need of medical attention" is a beautiful, sad record. sparsely produced and elegant. lead off track "the news of your son" will leave you breathless. if there was any justice, it would be number one all over the world. it's haunting. the rest of the record lives up brilliantly to this advance billing. "goodbye, doctor" will stay with you for days, while "i'd rather be deadly than dead" will have you humming in your cubicle while watching the clock. frankly, this is the best record you will buy this year. you owe it to yourself to receive open plaskett surgery.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little on the weird side... November 27, 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This album requires some getting used to. It explores a darker side of Joel Plaskett and I can see that some Thrush Hermit fans may be disappointed here if they're looking for rock. I still thouroughly enjoyed this album and suggest it to anyone who enjoys Thrush Hermit or Joel Plaskett
