From the Manufacturer

Electronic Arts' Need for Speed series continues to lead the exotic car-racing pack in its latest incarnation, Need for Speed: High Stakes. Though graphically similar to the previous version (Need for Speed III), High Stakes innovates with new race tracks, visible car damage, and a career mode that should please racing fans.

Diverse play modes separate Need for Speed: High Stakes from standard driving computer games. Though single races and tournaments across several tracks are readily available, players can also participate in the inventive Hot Pursuit mode, where you flee from police or try to catch speeders, as well as a career game.

In the career game, drivers begin with enough cash to buy a low-end sports car. Prize money earned in races can be spent on repairs, performance upgrades, or a hotter car. High Stakes contains over twenty exotic cars, including the BMW Z3, Lamborghini Diablo SV, Porsche 911 Turbo, and Ferrari F50. Additional dream machines are available at Electronic Arts' Web site. If you don't have the patience to save up for a new car, you can choose the ultimate high stakes race: winner takes all, including the opponent's car.

With cutting-edge graphics and sound, Need for Speed: High Stakes reigns as the current leader in arcade racing. Whether you're a NFS veteran or new to the series, Need for Speed: High Stakes 's polished gameplay, sleek design, and plentiful play options should keep you on the open road for quite awhile. --Doug Radcliffe

Pros:

  • Incredible graphics and lightning-fast engine provide true sense of speed
  • New career mode offers role-playing-like experience
  • Additional cars and tracks can be downloaded from Electronic Arts
  • Damage modeling lets you bang up that beautiful Lamborghini
Cons:
  • Not a revolutionary upgrade to Need for Speed III

5.0 out of 5 stars High Stakes- High Rating, March 6, 2003

This review is from: Need for Speed: High Stakes (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
Auto racing and driving games are tops on my list for the PC. I've already bought several of them and I've only owned a PC for a year and a half. I recently bought NEED FOR SPEED HIGH STAKES and I consider it my favorite in a dead heat with DRIVER! They are both great as far as the demos are concerned and even though the detail and graphics could be a little better, it still turns me on. I am still a novice but the SNOWY RIDGE course is my favorite even though it's fairly challenging. My top speed is over 90 and that's really great for me(a beginner). I got used to this one rather quickly and I love the good variety of courses and cars. The Corvette is my personal preference. My joystick works pretty well with HIGH STAKES and it is not a really sophisticated one. Great job on this game EA!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Need 4 Speed, March 20, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Need for Speed: High Stakes (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
This game rocks. It is very realistic and fun. It is cool because you can upgrade that sleek new Mclaren that just won you about $1,000,000 in the realistic Career play mode. But it can be frustrating because it is easy too crash. Even if you hate driving games you will love this one

3.0 out of 5 stars Falling Short From The Cops, March 5, 2003
This review is from: Need for Speed: High Stakes (Jewel Case) (CD-ROM)
Sometimes when a sequel is made for a video game, it can often be a mistake for them to follow the success that the original version has hatched within the gamers. With Need For Speed, it often made itself into a huge dynamic franchise within the video game industry. But sometimes, it never seems to go within that trial. It just makes you want to go all the way back to the previous video game because you're so use to it.

The Need For Speed sequel: High Stakes, consists of several hip cars you can definitely race across seven tracks to start with, and several fast speed automobiles, including the Chevrolet Camaro, and the legendary corvette. Otherwise, the game falls a little bit short within the tracks. Although the seven opening tracks are nice, the other hidden tracks were from the previous Need For Speed 3: Hot Pursuit, making it seem to familiar to grounds that were already made a little while ago.

Although this game falls a little bit short from the sequel, it is a nice welcome to new computer gamers. But, if you've played the previous games, I suggest you pass this one up, and get the Need For Speed 3: Hot Pursuit, or the newer Hot Pursuit 2.
