3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best racing/driving game out there
I rented this game and played it quite a bit. It is not bad but the physics stink. Adding to what others mentioned. If I get spun around in a McLaren or any high horsepower RWD car in a tight area, why can't I stomp on it and blow the rear around to get going again? Why when I hit the wall instead of bouncing off the way I am traveling with momentum, I spin around the...

Unlike everyone else who reviewed this, I actually own this game for the X-box! ;-) Although I am a racing purist, NFS2: Hot Pursuit offers a level of excitement and challenge not offered in other console racing titles. Because (as the name implies) you are being pursued by cops while in a race to the finish, you have to avoid patrol cars, spike strips, road blocks, and helicopters that drop explosives in your path while trying to finish first amoungst the supercars you're racing against.

In addition to the impressive array of vehicles (NOTE: The cops get supercars too, so you can expect to be chased by Lamborghini and Dodge Viper police vehicles!), the tracks are interesting and fun. Shortcuts and reverse modes make them exciting to play over and over again, and the rewards for winning (you earn money to unlock special NFS editions of the super cars) make the game "replayabilty" absolultely top-notch.

Short answer: If you like the Need for Speed series, you'll love this X-box port. If you haven't heard of NFS, but enjoy driving games that offer more than just a start-to-finish line challenge, this is the title for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Game, June 15, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (Video Game)
Wow this game is awesome. If you like racing games then this is the one 4 u. This game has great graphics, awesome cars, and innumerable tracks(because u can play each track in 4 different directions). The handling and speed of the cars are more realistic than any other racing game i've ever played. I only have 2 complaints with this game, 1)The cops are too hard at the very beginning of the game, they have way to fast cars and they are to skilled for the very first levels. Through the game though you learn how to avoid them and it gets about twice as fun. 2) The damage to the cars when you wreck isnt very realistic. I hit a tree going almost 200 mph and all it did was make my car smoke out the back and it opened my hood. It didn't even effect the way my car drove. This game has great graphics. When you go off road the smoke from the ground isn't just black/gray like other racing games, its actually the color of the ground and its not all blocky looking. Also another thing i like is that when u make skid marks they don't go away throughout the race. I think that's awesome because i like to look at my skid marks to see the mistakes i make the first time and try not to make that same mistake more than once. Also the cars look like real cars. The shininess of the paint actually changes with the different lighting of the track. Since there are so many cars and tracks you cant ever get bored with this game. I love this game and would recommend it to anyone who likes racing games with great graphics and awesome cars. This game rox.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Buying!, October 17, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (Video Game)
I had my doubts about this game, but I went ahead and bought from best buy. The game is a lot funner than I thought. The game is nice and arcadey, but with a realistic feel. not as arcadey as rush.
You start off with a few cars in single challenge mode, but as you work your way through the Hot Pursuit and Championship, you earn more and more points and can buy more cars with those points. There are many supercars to choose from like the Lamborghini Diablo,
Lamborghini Murcielago, McLaren F1, Ferarri F50 and many others. The gameplay is fast and relatively easy. You get a good steady framerate at high speeds and the cops act realistic, maybe too much, at times. I have a few minor complaints, though. When you skid up against the side of something, its like there is superglue or the side of your car and you hit it or it messes you up. Also the po pos or police can be a little hard on you when you have a slower car as they constantly turn you around and make you run into walls, which can get unbearably annoying at times of high pressure like tournaments... The jump camera that comes on when you hit a high jump is fun to watch, though and if you hit something going fast enough you can really gets some good air. i recommend this game to anyone who likes a little arcadey racing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best nfs ever!, October 1, 2004

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (Video Game)
I can't see how anyone can say anything negative about this game. The graphics are excellent, almost as good as underground, and gameplay is great. Personally I thought that this game had well mixed simulation and arcade driving physics. I mean you can still do a powerslide using the handbrake, but you don't go into annoying oversteer like in nfs porshe. And now to come to the title point of the game. Hot pursuit! This has been vastly improved from the original tilte. In nfs3 you could only race against 1 other racer while in hot pursuit mode, but now you can race against a full grid. Plus you earn points from gettting away from the police. It's a bit easier to get away now, but if you get caught once thats it. And you see a great movie of your driver getting hauled into a police car by about 6 armed cops. This cracked me up the first time I saw it. The cops use an even greater variety of weapons to stop you, including a helicopter that drops bombs onto the road! So you end up driving on a winding course, trying to pass your opponents while escaping from police and dodging other police coming from in front of you, and avoiding flaming bombs dropped from helicopters.(and pushing the cops and opponents into them!)
The only complaints I have to make are that the cars are not realistic in their stats(like a ferrari 360 spider can outrun a Porshe turbo in this game, while in real life it couldn't), and that your opponents never seem to get busted by the police.
If you own a PC or PS2 you should definetly get this. You'll love it if you liked nfs4 and nfs3, or any other arcade racers, or even if you liked the racing part of underground. But if you liked the great physics in nfs5 you may be dissapointed at nfshp2's fast arcade style gameplay.

5.0 out of 5 stars best racing game..., September 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (Video Game)
EA's NFS series are pretty much the only racing games I play (with the xception of Rallisport Challenge). It is not a typical boring racer where you have start with a [cruddy] car, race on dull tracks, earn money and then race again and again until it gets any more fun when you get a decent car. In Hot Pursuit 2, you start off with one of the hottest dream cars on the globe. You get to try them out on open road, with lots of cops, copters, and other hazards. It gets much more intense than other racers (say GT3 or Sega GT).

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, but a slight repetitive feel, October 20, 2003
This review is from: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (Video Game)
I bought this game a while back because Im a NFS fan. I like the fact that anybody can pick up the controller and just play. There are tons or cool cars and my personal favorites are: the NFS Corvette Z06, and the NFS F1 McLaren. The concept is to race and earn money. With the money earned you can buy different cars. The NFS vehicles boast higher zero to sixty times as well as improved handling and top speed. There is also a deep racing mode that can actually get kind of boring and the bonuses arent anything great. I gave it 3 stars because the graphics are average and the racing can be tedious and repetetive.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Buy, May 11, 2003

This review is from: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (Video Game)
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is an excellent game if you like racing games. The speeds you can reach are insane and the cars handle very well. The cars EA picked for the game are excellent. The coolest car is definitly the McLaren F1. I've played almost every Electronic Arts racing game and they are definitly a gaming company to respect. This game definitly lives up to the standards of the Need for Speed series. The graphics are very good and the tracks are very in depth and have lots of detail. The hot pursuit and event trees are very good. I've found myself going through them over and over and over, trying to rack up as many points as I can.

However, there are a few things I don't like. One is that you can't upgrade any of the cars with parts. But this isn't that big of a problem. The cool slow-motion view you get when getting good amounts of air time is neat, but can be annoying if you have a curve ahead and could mess you up. The cars have damage which is somewhat realistic visually, but you have to crash a lot of times just to see even the smallest dent. The cops in the game are easy, but only if you have a fast car. I've also noticed that the cops seem to have a "boost of speed" if they're far behind. You could actually have a faster car than the cop, but the cop would catch up to you extremely fast. The police also have a heleicopter, but is really stupid: it drops barrels that make you flip up in the air, pretty cool to watch, but not so for you're standings in the race.

Overall, this is an excellent game, and I would definitly reccomend it to anyone who likes racing.

If I get spun around in a McLaren or any high horsepower RWD car in a tight area, why can't I stomp on it and blow the rear around to get going again? Why when I hit the wall instead of bouncing off the way I am traveling with momentum, I spin around the opposite direction? It's a fun game, but the frustrating physics just [ticked] me off too many times to actually go out and buy it. Looks like I am still going back and playing Gotham Racing and Rallisport Challenge which to me are still better driving/racing games. The only good thing about NFS is the cops chasing you.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good racing game, December 30, 2003
This review is from: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (Video Game)
the game is your classic racing game with cops. complete certain objectives but don't get caught by the cops. Good 2 player racing. Good for racing fans. A really nice thing is the career mode. this allows you to buy a car and race to win money. with the money you can buy upgrades, unlock cars and tracks. the bad thing is that the missions are kind of randomly put together. there is no real purpose except to get money. buy if a good price comes your way.
