Still one of the best...,

While the Gran Turismo series is the best racing game/sim out there, Need For Speed(the first one only) still has the best inside car view. Most other games, graphically speaking, are much more refined than NFS, but only NFS has a display of the car's dashboard when playing in first person view. Each car's dashboard and instrument binnacle is accurately depicted, including speedometers and tachometers that display according to the functions of the car the player is driving. Amazing, how have game manufacturers not been able to recreate this since NFS first appeared? I lost my copy of this game and am now trying to find it, since all my other games don't have the accurate dash display. I miss this game... The driving dynamics and physics of this game are still one of the best, rating close to, if not equal to the Gran Turismo series. While the graphics may be crude (I haven't played this game in about ten years, but can only imagine what they would look like now), the gameplay is excellent. Too bad there aren't more cars (I can only recall about 5 or 6) and there is only one European car (Porsche 911). I wish someone would recreate the element of a realistic dashboard in games now. I can't think of any, can anyone else? Hopefully Gran Turismo 4 will have this element. This game is still one of my favorites, due to this feature.

This is one of the funnest racing games I have ever played. Its simple and fun. The cars you get to choose from are really cool. Split screen race a friend is a great feature too. A classic game to say the least.

This review is from: The Need for Speed (Video Game)
Electronic Arts brings you Road & Track expertise and raod test data, six tracks, more if you're fast enough, four race types: tournement, head to head, single race, or time trials. Four eye-watering perspectives and highlight reels and replay so you can relive your most white-knuckled performances.
1. Take on challengers using split-screen or link-up, or let the game challenge you. 2. High Speed has its consequences 3. Cars behave like they should so you can't drive them like you shouldn't 4. See stats, video, and a history of each car.

Okay, so we can all agree that all the newer "Need for Speed" games are better, but this game was the first to come out. If you keep that in mind, it's not half bad. It's sort of a...classic. The beginning movie really cool, the cars handle realisticly, the crashes are incredible, and the courses are pretty fun. If I wanted something to complain about, it *might* be the graphics, which are kinda "fuzzy" and it does take a long time to load. Two player mode is righteous (I can't believe I just said that...) and there are some pretty neat codes available for this game, too.Basically, I would highly recommend this game as long as graphics aren't the most important thing to you and you don't mind a really cool classic (like..Duck Hunt...or Donkey Kong.) :)

The classic Need For Speed title. It did for racing games what Mortal Kombat did for fighting games - introduced a new level of quality and realism. Great graphics, gameplay and music. You can get the PC version or play the PSX one with an emulator if you don't have a PSX/PS2.
