What are these reviewers talking about?,

This review is from: Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed (CD-ROM)
This game is over a year old (maybe two years old now) and it's *still* the most realistic driving sim out there. Not to mention it's also one of the most beautiful. Couple this with the fact it'll run on almost any PC out now and there is no reason why I *wouldn't* recommend this game to any driving fan.The physics of the different cars is truly incredible - it really does feel like you're driving different cars. This is most evident when you go through "Evolution" mode where you start with the older, slower porsches and work up to the newer, better-handling models. That said, this game can get tough. Even on the easiest level you have to spend some time in the garage tweaking your machine to get it to beat your computer opponents. Don't listen to these negative reviewers. This is one of the only "classic" games I play to this day. At this price it's a must-buy! Hope the review helped. Derek

Fantastic game.,

My opinion is the exact opposite of the negative reviewers...I think NFS:PU is by far the BEST of the Need for Speed series (and in fact I think all previous versions are terrible, but that is probably due to the fact they area older). This game is indeed for the people with refined tastes who love expensive, quality cars like Porsches (and those like me who only dream of them)--the graphics and the settings (French countryside, Monaco) are drop-dead gorgeous are realistic, and the handling of the cars and steering (with a Logitech Wheel) is realistic (unlike other games like Colin McRae 2.0). Of all the driving games I've played, this is by far my favourite.

It's not a game, it's a driving simulator,

It is fun, but it's not fun because it rewards you easily. It's fun because it gives you a taste of what a real Porsche feels like. Forget just putting the hammer down and thumb-wiggling your way to victory. Play this game seriously and you'll soon be reading real racing web pages for tips on selecting the best lines to take through the corners, and how to set up your suspension. It's addictive, frustrating, and ultimately very, very satisfying. I've learned more about cars and driving from this game than most people learn from driving schools. Now that I own a real performance car, it's even more obvious that Porsche Unleashed was and is an extremely realistic simulator. Everything I learned in the game translates directly to the road. I drive it now just to practice what I want to do on the road! If you want the experience of driving a high performance vehicle at the limits, at a tiny fraction of the price, buy this game. Even though it's a few years old, the laws of physics haven't changed, the graphics are still acceptable, and you can be assured of decent frame rates on all modern hardware.

Realism Couldn't Be Better,

Everything in this game is a blast! I absolutely praise the way each Porsche model has its own technique of adjusting gears, braking, acceleration, handling, you name it!
Each level is absolutely breathtaking and it only gets better as you progress through this game, and believe me, one of the levels recaptures the famous "Empire City", industrial level from NFS: HS. One of the levels unlocked later in the game, Auvergne, is a gorgeous route to travel on, even by yourself...you won't be dissapointed with an ultra-highly realistic waterfall and archeological remnants of the tall, white pillars. Evolution mode is my favorite part of the game. You race in pre-planned tracks and circuits from 50's Porsches to the 2000's Porsches. Racing like this gives me a great experience not found in other games! When you want a car (and this is also fantastic), you can either buy it new or used. I like new more for better performance, since you can feel the speed. However, used is great for restoring your Porsche and installing parts to make it the ultimate Porsche! From the 50's to 2000's..You name it! You should not hesitate to buy this game. The tracks are brilliantly crafted, the cars are superbly detailed--inside and out, the freedom of being able to test parts on your vehicle, and the ultimate sensation you capture from this game makes you want to drive and drive forever! And the fact that this game is adaptable for almost any current computer! You will definitely be mistaken if you do not buy this game now!

The best driving simulator out there,

Some other reviewers dont like the physics engine or say the game is too hard. Nonsense. They aren't used to realistic driving games, that's all.In a real car, when you go fast around a corner you get to a point where your tires dont have enough grip and you start to slide. If your rear tires lose grip before your front tires you OVERSTEER, and if you dont correct quickly you can end up spinning. Porsches have a reputation for strong oversteer, and this tendency is beautifully modelled in the game. If you go into a corner too fast and then brake hard while you're turning you will OVERSTEER. This is because braking shifts the weight off the rear tires and makes them lose grip. In NFSV: PU you cannot step on the brakes in a corner while driving the 911s, or you WILL spin. Do your braking before you get to the corner, then stay on the gas through the corner. Even just lifting off the gas in the corner can be enough to bring on sudden, strong oversteer. The physics engine and the modelling of car handling dynamics are better in this game than any other I've played. NFS 6 regrettably returns to a more arcade style that will probably appeal more to fans of Midtown Madness. If you want to know what it's like to drive a REAL car to its limits, buy NFSV: PU.

Here's what I would say, each thing is out of ten.
Graphics-9 Price-9 How long it Lasts-8 Gameplay-8 It would be better if there were police, but other than that, a fantastic game with great graphics.

This is the best of all nfs games, yes, even underground. Most of the races are the kind where you have to get from this point to that point, and there are hardly any lap races. I loved this game's extremely detailed tracks. They varied from farms to cities to even train stations. I also liked the fact that even though the cars are only porsches, there was a wide selection of more than 50. There was an evolution mode where you start out in the 50's and work your way through the classic era through the golden era and finally the modern era. You can also join a porsche team and run complicated courses or deliver vehicles to customers. There is also a history book about porsches in the game, so this game is fun and educational. New things in this game include transparent windows, turn signals, realistic damage (better than nfs4), and fully animated convertibles (insted of the roof just popping down instantly it is actually animated). I recommend this game to anyone who likes porsches, whether classic or modern.

Great graphics and landscape. Challeging and fun gameplay. It would have been better with police and more features. Overall, great for fans of NFS, and pretty much all racing games.

Take it from a 40 year old that played Test Drive 17 years ago. I have also played NFS 1, 2, 3, 4.... underground, underground II and Most wanted. They are all fun and some more realistic than others. This game is the most realistic ever. If you don't mind driving only Porsches and don't mind having a bit of a learning curve this game is for you. I played it when it just came out and cannot remembered who I loaned the disk to. Good thing I could buy it back 8 years later for a great price. It runs fine in XP.
