I received this book as a gift and loved it. It goes into great detail about how to achieve results when needle felting. It has good pictures and very easy to understand instructions. It offers ideas to acheive the results you want using basic shapes to form your felted piece. It had new techniques and Harlan shares her vast talent with the reader so that you feel you can be satisfied with your work.

Extremely inspiring book!,

I recently got this book and it's worth every penny.
What I particularly like about it compared to other needle felting books is that it isn't geared toward specific "projects" which don't really interest me. This is a problem I've had with project-oriented books in general - I have to figure out on my own how to transform one project into something I really want to make. Harlan is very thorough in her explanations of techniques, materials, etc., and after reading this book I feel well prepared to make creations of my own design. Her own creations are amazing and inspiring, she shows how you can make virtually anything out of a ball of wool and a needle. I can't wait to get started!

I have a lot of needle felting books, this being the best one yet. She guides you through the shapes, then how to put them together. There is a couple of projects, they are fun and help one learn how the shapes work together. I loved how she teaches. Learning to make realistic fur was very neat. There are photos of tiny kittens she makes on some of the pages. Beautiful work! This is not a project book, it is a book on how to truly needle felt. How one puts together what they learn is up to them. I found it creative. I used to be a potter sculptor. I know how shapes went together... with stoneware clay. Using wool and a sharp needle, the concept of making and putting together shapes had to be altered to work with the medium and tools. This is a must-have book for me.

I took a needle felting course several years ago and loved the medium. This is a very good fundamental book on how to make shapes plus some good xtra pointers(LOL)! I really enjoyed this book and it fired me up to get my wool out again and needle felt.

There are a lot of books on needle felting. And I would recommend about any of them rather than this one. I admit that I've done a lot of needle felting, and exhibited some of my needle felted dolls in art galleries, but I'm always interested in learning a new technique or slant on the subject. I returned this the next day after buying it. Not only is it simplistic to a fault, except for the dragon on the cover, the objects are not all that good. From an artist point of view, they are just plain not good enough. If you want to spend money on the best needle felting books - get something by Birgitte Krag Hansen. She's a pioneer in this art and all the same information for beginners is in them - but the results are stunning - AND you can make something fabulous first time out. There are some small books by Ayala Taipei, you don't need both, one will do it, that are less expensive, but certainly give you even more information and, again, the results are something you can be proud of. I also thought that the author has invented some needle holders, and lets the reader know they will be available for sale at some point, claiming they are better than any others. Well .... perhaps, but there are plenty of options and many of them work very nicely. I've used any number of holders, as well as made entire objects just using the bare needles (holders do help if you have arthritis,) and find it's an individual choice. Look around, just in case these are spendy. Okay, enough, just know I would suggest looking further for a good book on the subject.
