5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest children's books of all time!
With any justice, Stamaty would be a household name with Sendak and Scarry in children's publishing. This book had a major effect on me as a child. Luckily for me, my school library had one tattered, well-read copy. I thought that I had the only remaining copy which I obtained a few years ago after a nationwide search. I even called Mr. Stamaty and he said he didn't...

1.0 out of 5 stars A view from the other side
Maybe it's a trans Atlantic thing, but please don't buy this book for any adult in Britain. I couldn't believe how badly drawn and banal it was. I think it's a good nostalgia trip, and I don't knock it for that, and I can see why little kids would like it, but please don't surprise any grown up in the UK with it.

Stamaty and he said he didn't have a copy (but maybe his mother did - he'd check.). Unbelievably detailed (after hundreds of readings I STILL find new things) and twistedly funny pen-and-ink drawings, bizarre characters, a profound moral message, and doughnuts, doughnuts, doughnuts! I'm writing this with the hope that one day it will be re-released so that more people could enjoy this book and appreciate Mr. Stamaty's obsessive genius. I still cannot understand why this book was a financial flop and so overlooked by critics when it was released (too weird?). Perhaps its time has come.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece!!!, September 19, 2003
By
This review is from: Who Needs Donuts? (Hardcover)
I started reading "Who Needs Donuts" in 1974, and have been making steady progress on it ever since. Someday, I hope to finish it. But that is unlikely, for this poignant story is filled with such intricate humorous detail, it is almost impossible to tell if you've completed it! This is a timeless masterpiece for readers of all ages, that until the reissue was available only to the lucky few who managed to get a copy in the 70s. Now that its back, everyone can and should know "Who Needs Donuts".

The book is wonderfully detailed and crazy! It will keep you entertained for hours. We would love to find a copy of it if we could. We haven't seen it since college. Every time you look at it, you find something new!

I was overjoyed when Who Needs Donuts was reissued. I would scan Amazon.com regularly, only to find used copies for hundreds of dollars. I owned a copy back-in-the-day and believe it to have been adopted by an old girlfriend. I'm going on my 3rd copy now and see no reason to stop recommending it while available.

Certain British reviewers have deemed it too low-brow for English Sensibilities. I however dream of the day Nick Park of Aardman Animations does even a short film based on this book. Could be better than "Where the Wild-Things Are".

Sorry Spike - I promise to rent the DVD...

5.0 out of 5 stars Everbody Needs Who Needs Donuts, November 29, 2003

As children, this book kept me and my brother occupied for hours -- day after day, trying to make sense of the bizare, witty, and highly detailed drawings. We both adored the extremely funny tone that never talked down to us, the offbeat storytelling, and the unusual characters that rarely make it into children's books! This book will likely become an instant favorite with your family -- I'm currently buying copies to give to some of my closest adult friends! Regardless of age, anyone with a sense of humor and love of the unusual will be most grateful for this wonderful book!

One point I want to make is ... What can we do to have the publisher reprint? Because obviously the book is impossible to find. This is a book that I distinctly remember from all the other books I read in my life. I know I am not the only one that feels this way. If you agree, log on and express your opinion.

This is a wonderful children's masterpiece that was definately ahead of it's time. I received this book as a child, so I still have the original paperback version of this book. I was so excited to see that it was coming back out this fall. I am taking this book tonight to my Children's Lit. Professor because she had never heard of it, I was astonished that she had not even seen this great piece of art and literature. It is a wonderful adventure, with a great love story, and a fabulous lesson to be learned in material and emotional sacrifices for the betterment of others.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lifelong search, April 6, 2001

My 5th grade teacher in Penn Valley, CA introduced me to this book in 1980. I am now 30 years old and have been looking for this book for the last 11 years. PLEASE SOMEONE reprint this book. My husband thinks I'm nuts because you can't believe this book until you are holding it in your hands and rotating it around to read all the miniscule writing.

I Need Who Needs Donuts.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHY, WHY, WHY?, September 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Who Needs Donuts? (Hardcover)
WHY is this book out of print!?! I've been on the hunt for this book for eons! Who Needs Donuts is pure genius in a off whack, crazed sort of way. With illustrations that I can only imagine must have taken a decade to create Stamaty's view of this "garbledegook" world takes on a child's eyes and heart in this book. Nothing compares.
