Book Description

January 9, 2007

In gentle, compassionate language, The Needs of the Dying helps us through the last chapter of our lives. Author David Kessler has identified key areas of concern: the need to be treated as a living human being, the need for hope, the need to express emotions, the need to participate in care, the need for honesty, the need for spirituality, and the need to be free of physical pain. Examining the physical and emotional experiences of life-challenging illnesses, Kessler provides a vocabulary for family members and for the dying that allows them to communicate with doctors, with hospital staff, and with one another, and—at a time when the right words are exceedingly difficult to find—he helps readers find a way to say good-bye. Using comforting and touching stories, he provides information to help us meet the needs of a loved one at this important time in our lives.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A Remarkably compassionate, uplifting book. We encourage all patients and their family and friends to read his words and thoughts." -- Ted Mann Cancer Center at UCLA

"David Kessler’s work has made a significant contribution in helping us understand the needs of the dying." -- American Cancer Society --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, author of "On Death and Dying"
"It is now, fortunately, my time to face death. David Kessler is my friend and student. He carries on my work, and his book will help."

Mother Teresa
This book is a source of reflection over that most mysterious and beautiful moment which awaits us all. It helps people to understand that death is the full surrender of ourselves to love, like a falling into the arms of God.

Marianne Williamson, author of "A Return to Love"
David Kessler was at my side as I watched my own father die. This book serves the needs of the person sitting by the bedside as much as it does the person who is lying in the bed. In it you will find gentleness and peace in the experience of death. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

I began my first book, The Needs of the Dying, under the guidance and encouragement of two extraordinary women - Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and Mother Teresa. I had worked in hospice for over twenty years, when The Needs of the Dying came out, I was honored that Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, a legendary pioneer in the field of hospice, and Mother Teresa, whose work will always represent the essence of love, found it worthy of their praise.

Since the original release of The Needs of the Dying I have been fortunate to write two books, Life Lessons and On Grief and Grieving with my friend and mentor, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross.

My books have been born out of the work I was doing. For example, Kubler-Ross and I were fascinated by the wonderful and profound Life Lessons we saw the dying were learning at the end of their lives and wanted to see those lessons passed on to those who were still healthy and young enough to make changes in their lives. As K bler Ross approached the end of her years, it was fitting that our last book together was, On Grief and Grieving. Elisabeth shared her life and work with the world, and I felt privileged to be there for her passing.

Now, my life appears to be a hybrid of several occupations, including my work with the dying, my volunteer work as a reserve officer on the police trauma team and my participation with the Red Cross on aviation disasters

Since teaching is one of my favorite parts of the work I see myself continuing to lecture at conferences, and also doing smaller one-day seminars.

I bought this book because my mother is dying and I needed to know more. Kessler has a wonderful way of delivering this knowledge. He is thorough in imparting this knowledge and does so with total compassion for the dying and the living. I underscored many passages in this work and especially appreciated someone telling me (chapter 8) what can I expect in the way of physical signs as mom goes through the dying process. This book is very user friendly having a very readable quality. I strongly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Give to friends dealing with family final illnesses, October 26, 2000
By
ANN (LOS ANGELES, CA United States) - See all my reviews
As a baby boomer, I have more and more friends dealing with their own illnesses or with the terminal illnesses of their friends and parents. I have ordered a stock of Mr. Kessler's book to give to them. It offers helpful advice on how to communicate in a compassionate and loving way--whether you are suffering from your own illness and trying to find a way to talk about it or trying to talk to dying friends or family. It is extraordinarily difficult to know how to approach the subject of dying--this book is a godsend.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book was a wonderful gift, November 20, 2002
By
Marianne DiBlasi (Winchester, MA United States) - See all my reviews
I bought this book when my Dad was entering into the final few months of his life and I wanted to go through this final chapter of his life with him in a meaningful way. David Kessler provides information on the needs of the dying in a kind, compassionate and truthful way. I find knowledge to be comforting and grounding. If you do also, this book will be a special gift to yourself.
