Tecnho, trance, rave, electronica - hey, it's all DANCE MUSIC to me. HOWEVER, I am really 'feeling' Alice Deejay. 2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre dance music
There is so much better dance artists around than the dance collective known as Alice Deejay. Amber, Madison Avenue, Kristine W., Sash!, the list could go on. It's not terrible but I wouldn't rank it as high as I would with Madison Avenue and Amber. "Better Off Alone" is definitely my least favorite track on this cd while I prefer "Back In My Life" and "Who Needs Guitars...

Tecnho, trance, rave, electronica - hey, it's all DANCE MUSIC to me. HOWEVER, I am really 'feeling' Alice Deejay. I first heard "Better Off Alone" while looking for music to play (I was a DJ for the event) at the University of California at Santa Barbara's "All-Hall Ball". Upon hearing the song online, I was very impressed. When it comes to dance music, I usually go for compilations, but this album is a safe buy. Let me explain why:

The album starts with "Back In My Life" (great song), which was already a huge hit in Europe. Then, "Better Off Alone" is next, and you'll find yourself satisfied that you own the CD cuz this song is so good! Then there's "Celebrate Our Love" which is a cool, pre-party/get dressed/go out song cuz it sounds like she's saying "Rave...Saturday Night" instead of "Yeah...Celebrate Our Love". Anywayz...

I really like "The Lonely One" - kinda reminds me of "Runaway" by the Real McCoy (remember them? - "Another Night" wuz their biggest hit). Next up is an extremely well done instrumental called "Who Needs Guitars Anyway?". Come to think of it, this may be the best song on the album. I have to mention "Fairytales" which is a slower, kinda mysterious song, and the other incredible instrumental on this album, "Everything Begins With an E" (hey...is that a drug reference? )

Yes, this is not hard house, but I consider it a a "gateway" CD to house music. Ladies, (and some fellas too), this is your stairmaster music - you'll have energy for dayz...But you can do just about ANYTHING to this music. As a matter of fact, I'm typing this to "Fairytales". So do yourself a favor, and expose yourself to the world of Alice Deejay.

You won't regret getting this if you enjoyed music by: Ace Of Base, The Real McCoy, Technotronic, Black Box, C&C Music Factory, Erasure (very Europop) or even Madonna's "Ray of Light". Trust me!

5.0 out of 5 stars A trance classic. Buy this., August 23, 2002
By A Customer
Alice Deejay combines love and desperation better than any other electronic artist on the scene. "Her" work is dark, lonely, pure, even when it's exuberant -- "Better Off Alone" has been as successful as it has because it mixes a relentless forward motion with a carefully preserved "electronicness" -- so listening to this album is like being in the dark and *searching*, but loving the search.

Sure, the sound becomes repetitive in a few of the less emergent tracks; but it's the unity of the sound that holds the album together, and on the whole it's an advantage. "Fairytales" (the panned track 8) is hypnotic in an Annie Lennox kind of way; it takes its time. It's atmospheric like the ocean, dreamy like a lullaby, but still crisp, still rigidly structured and punctuated with vinyl rips, and it's a gorgeous contrast to the rest of the album.

Another winner (for you kindred spirits out there), furiously up-tempo like the bulk of the CD, is "No More Lies". I haven't heard such jubilant desperation since Skribble's remix of Olive's rendition of "I'm Not in Love", and this track tops Olive's detached notes with its own driven, hopeful/plaintive arcs. The zenith of the album tilts the CD's characteristic yearning angerward; play "I've Got to Get Away" while driving from a job you hate *once*, and you'll find yourself playing it every day.

All that said, some of the tracks are playful, teasing, and just plain fun, and there are enough anthems on this CD, and simple, soaring melodies, to please any electronic fan. The album works as a bridge, too, between top-40 remixes and the first stirrings of trance appreciation, so it's a friendly introduction for those who aren't (yet) in the know. In short: this album was made by clubbers *for* clubbers; it understands the many moods of clubbings, and it's with its listener every step of the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alice Deejay, the queen of trance, August 23, 2005
This review is from: Who Needs Guitars Anyway (Audio CD)
it has been a few years since Alice Deejay--judy--has put out her debut album who needs guitars anyway. It still remains as one of the best trance/rave albums ever! I can say that this album is perfect, every song is great and catchy with amazing trance beats. It is the perfect album to get up and dance to or get a good morning workout.

Back in my Life:A great opening to the album and the start of the trance journey. Alice Deejay's 2nd best known hit song that plays in clubs and raves across Europe. The trance riffs are amazing. A real get up and dance song. My 3rd fav song on the cd (5/5)

Better off alone:Alice Deejays best known song, considered the best song on the album. Another great song that shows what a great dj judy is. (5/5)

Celebrate our love:My most fav song on the cd!! I love the beats and the lyrics are nice and kinda draw u into a fantasy. Should be one of her hits. A pure trance song(5/10)

The Lonely one: A hard driven trance song, again the beats are awsome. Judy did another awsome job. (4/5)

Who needs guitars anyway?: The tittle song and the reason why i got the cd. It starts off slow but it gets better the more u listen to it. The rythem is very bouncy. I love the piano solos. Its one of the songs that has no lyrics. My second fav, very cool song (5/5)

Will I ever: third fav, fun and happy song. The song is about Judy wondering if she will fall in love with the person she loves. (5/5)

Elements of life: my forth fav, an electronic riff song, judy's voice sounds very haunting but its still a good club song altogether (5/5)

Fairytales:hmmm...a very so-so song. Mellow sounding, slow electronica dance. Its okay...(3/5)

Waiting for your love: Everyone says this is a filler song on the album, and its not that good but in my opinion i think its good. Not the best not the worst. Its still equally good. (4/5)

No more lies: The peak of the album. Another very amazing song with amazing beats and riffs and the lyrics are very catchy. (5/5)

I can see it in your eyes: Very well made song, a good follow up for no more lies, this album just gets better and better..(5/5)

Everything begins with an E: Kinda sounds like the venga boys music, one song on their platnum album sounds like this song. Another no lyrics song but you gotta love these songs with the piano solos (5/5)

Got to get away:The fastest song on the cd. A solid hard driven trance song (4/5)

Alice Deejay:This song explains the orgins of alice deejay. She closes her eyes, she is rythem, she is music, she's a dj...she is Alice Deejay! My fifth fav song. I love the rythem of the song--trance mixed with electronica and piano beats. A great conclusion to the album and the trance journey. (10/5)

So those are my reviews of the songs. I love this album so much it feels like i can marry it! (just kidding) but still this is an amazing piece of work and i would recomend buying this album to anyone. This is pure trance, this is pure electronica, this is pure dance, this is ALICE DEEJAY!

Hard to resist this high tech Europop. If you like Eiffel 65 or Sash's "Encore Une Fois", chances are you will like this. "Better Off Alone", currently breaking in New York clubs and on radio, just one of many tunes that make it impossible to listen and sit still. "Back In My Life", "The Lonely One" and "Will I Ever" other examples of album's winners. Most songs have strong, driving beat (which I prefer), but there are a few slower ones (e.g. "Fairytales"). CD packaging notes Explicit Lyrics. Personally, I do not like explicit lyrics and this made me hesitate to buy the CD. Nevertheless, I did and I have not heard any lyrics I found explicit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, October 15, 2000
By
Katie Miller (Helena, Montana USA) - See all my reviews
I bought the edited version at a store because that was the only one in stores here. Well worth the wait for me. Had to raise money for doing chores. Alice Deejay is, well different. I'd only heard "Better Off Alone" on a DMX station, decided I liked it, then spent possibly a month or so listening to the clips on Amazon.com. Spent last week and the week before doing dishes, and earned enough to get it a week earlier than my schedule had predicted I'd get it. Songs on it are mostly techno with a little piano here and there. Of course Alice sings, too. Listening to waiting for your love while typing and thinking about my favorite songs. Back in my life is excellent. My favorite right now. Everything begins with an E is good too. Makes you think of water and sun. Although this sounds dorky, the reason you ought to get this cd is that you'll like it if you like other europopeans like Eiffel 65 or Aqua. Enjoy it whom ever buys it!

5.0 out of 5 stars ALICE DEEJAY - GET IT!, May 29, 2005
This review is from: Who Needs Guitars Anyway (Audio CD)
It's been more than 5 years now that Judy made her debut album "Who needs guitars anyway?". Not only did the album contain several big hits across Europe like "Back in my life", "Better off alone", "the lonely one", and "Will I ever", but the album also contained several other high quality eurodance tracks like the title track "Who needs guitars anyway?", "Elements of life", "No more lies", and "Everything begins with an E".

If you at all just remotely like to listen to dance or trance once in a while, this album is one that you should at least know. It is a born classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars she's a club girl, December 3, 2000
If you ever been to a club then you know what I mean. The music of Alice Deejay is always pumpin' in the clubs. Let's give a run down of her famous tracks

Back in my life - Probably her 2nd single. This is a light trance tune that is very catchy. There's even a video of this song on the cd!

Better off alone - I'd say this is what made her in the clubs. This song is very addictive and is still being played in clubs today! You gotta listen to it and love it.

Will I ever - A very good song about someone wondering if she will ever find the right person. Continues the catchiness of alice deejay. But never became big in clubs, which is a shame.

I can see it in your eyes - Currently her club hit. Good but get's old kinda fast

This is a CD for people who enjoy mainstream trance mixed in with somewhat of euro. If you go clubbing alot, then you probably have heard her music. Her music is very addictive to listen to. Caution: this cd is meant to be heard LOUD, if you listen to it through a pair of headphones, it just loses a part of its essence :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Alice Deejay Review, April 20, 2000

For a cd to get 5 stars, it needs to be exceptional. And while this CD is not exceptional, it is still very good and worth the money. Better off ALone is apopular favorite, but the CD introduces you to Want you back in my life and others. We even get some MONO type of music. Out of the 14 tracks, 7 are excellent....5 are very good, and the remaining two are somewhat passable. This is still a very worthy effort, especially from newcomer Alice Deejay. Perhaps the most popular artist in Miami for Trance...if you like Alice you;ll LOVE George Acosta's trance mixes.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT but not the best..., December 25, 2000

Dj SydeWynder (Brantford, ON Canada) - See all my reviews
Let me start by saying this cd was just GREAT when I first listened to it. You gotta keep it on FULL-BLAST though or it just sucks. After a while, you seem to only listen to it once-in-a-while, its good but gets old after a period of time... Alotta CD's are the same in that mannor though so I'd say just BUY IT and ENJOY! If you enjoy Trance/Euro/Club Dance, you'll love the GREAT music on this GREAT cd! 2 Thumbs Up!! =)

4.0 out of 5 stars The Birth of a Dance Diva, April 19, 2001

the enlightened one (under the tree of enlightenment) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Who Needs Guitars Anyway (Audio CD)
"Who Needs Guitars Anyways?," the debut album by Dutch DJ Judy, along with famed producers Pronti & Kalmani and Danski & Delmundo (of the Vengaboys), brings forth the emergence of the "mixing House beats with a little Trance and Europop" craze. This album may not be very flexible (most European dance music sounds very much the same) since it recycles the same drum loops and has very predictable melodies, but Alice Deejay's music is technical enough and playful enough to have your feet stomping to the music. Judy does not have the greatest of vocals, but then again, it's not really the singer you should be listening to anyways, thanks to the amazing instrumentals.

Songs such as "Better Off Alone," "Back in My Life," and "Will I Ever" have all become established international club hits. A couple million people dancing to the same beat couldn't be too wrong, now could they? "Better Off Alone" as a matter of fact skyrocketed to #1 on the dance charts in at least 5 different countries, making it one of the greatest singles of 1999-2000. Asides from the three chart-toppers, you have some other mentionable songs such as the title track, "Who Needs Guitars Anyways?"

Hopefully Alice Deejay will continue bringing forth solid albums with even more club anthems. Judy is bound to become one of the great figureheads of club culture.

So in conclusion, buy this album if you're looking for something fun, something exciting, or something great to play at parties. Don't buy this album if you are looking for the finer things in music, such as complex rhythms, basslines, or melodies (in which case you should try searching for the REAL House-Trance crossovers. i.e. Mauro Picotto)
