Book Description

December 1, 1999

• A comprehensive look at the many therapeutic and ecological uses of neem.

• Used in India for over 4,000 years, neem is one of the most popular therapeutic plants in the Indian pharmacopoeia.

• Effective in the treatment of fever, malaria, skin diseases, dental problems, diabetes, arthritis, and jaundice.

• A natural pesticide hailed by many for its diverse ecological benefits.

In India--where it has been used for more than 4,000 years--the neem tree has such a variety of medical applications that it is sometimes referred to as the village pharmacy. Now modern research is proving what has been long known by Ayurvedic medicine practitioners: neem is one of the most effective plant medicines in the world. An extremely powerful blood purifying agent and detoxicant, neem is also effective in the treatment of fever, malaria, skin diseases, dental problems, diabetes, tumors, arthritis, and jaundice. It has gained particular attention from scientists seeking a cure for AIDS, not only for its antiviral properties, but also because it boosts the immune system on all levels without destroying beneficial bacteria, unlike synthetic antibiotics.

In addition to its numerous uses as a healing agent, neem has been receiving much attention for the ecological benefits it provides. For centuries Indians have been mixing neem leaves with stored grains to prevent insect infestation. But neem is not simply a natural alternative to pesticides; increasingly it is being used to reverse desertification and to reduce erosion and deforestation, making it an important weapon in the fight against global warming. Neem's many practical applications make it of enormous interest to anyone concerned about health and ecology. Included are recipes and practical tips that let you enjoy the many benefits of this miraculous plant.

5.0 out of 5 stars A need-to-read book on Neem, February 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Neem: India's Miraculous Healing Plant (Paperback)
You will want to read this book about Neem, especially if you live in the US, where Neem in not well-known. The author has done an excellent job of introducing Neem to anyone who is totally unfamiliar with it, and doing it in an easy-to-read fashion.

We have used Neem, and benefited greatly from it, since reading this well-written book on Neem.

1.0 out of 5 stars Advice maybe ok for humans, but beware the chapter on pets, September 26, 2011
By
AmznSFgal (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Neem: India's Miraculous Healing Plant (Paperback)
I'm not a vet, nor a neem expert, but the author's neem seed and tea tree oil shampoo recipe for pets p64 seems an irresponsible concoction for two reasons (1) from what I've read, you should be very careful adding tea tree oil to any treatment of a pet. Even the ASPCA, under the "Ask the Expert Poison Control" (search for "tea tree oil") confirms the potential harmful effects. And you can be certain that the exposure to cats wouldn't just be dermal, they'd lick much of it too. If the author knows this risk, it certainly isn't apparent with any warnings (2) my understanding is that neem leaf is ok to ingest, but not neem seed. Again, this would go straight to a cats digestion after licking itself. A responsible way to write a chapter on pet care would include those nuggets of info. Again, I'm no expert, but the available neem and tea tree information for pets seems to be worth the author's effort to precaution pet owners. Doesn't build my confidence in the rest of the book and concerns me for the pet owners who might follow that advice.
