Great Art, Poor Construction,
By The Schooligan (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Neglected Murderesses & The Deranged Cousins: 2006 Calendar (Spiral-bound)
I love the art of Edward Gorey and make a point to purchase a calendar or planner featuring his work each year. The Neglected Murderesses is a wonderful collection of Gorey's work.
I have to say, however, that I am somewhat disappointed with the construction of this item. Within 3 weeks of daily usage, the plastic that protects the back cover fell off. A week or so later, the spiral binding started to come undone, so I have to be wary of jabbing myself on the sharp metallic edges. I have not had any problems like this with any other Gorey planners that I have used and am disappointed that this one seems unable to stand up to regular, everyday usage.

From the Publisher,

"Two amusingly gothic stories with ominous yet beguiling drawings and plots from the master of the sprightly disturbing are sure to enliven your reading pleasure. Presented with tongue in check, Neglected Murderesses features twelve delightfully wicked specimens of 'the fairer sex' whose homicidal acts have faded into obscurity, including wheelchair killer Nurse J. Rosebeetle, lumberjack hacker Sarah Jane ('Batears') Olafsen, and tea tainter Mrs. Fledaway. The Deranged Cousins, one of Gorey's most popular books, relates the dreadful saga of how three hapless and unsupervised orphaned cousins--Rose Marshmary, Mary Rosemarsh, and Marsh Maryrose--meet their demise.
"Gorey was a master of image and words in over 100 works. His first anthology, Amphigorey, was selected in 1972 by The New York Times Book Review as one of the five most noteworthy art books of the year. The Broadway hit production of Edward Gorey's Dracula was a Tony winner, and he created the animated introduction to the PBS series Mystery. "112 page, spiral-bound weekly engagement calendar with 28 illustrations and text from two Gorey epics and clear plastic covers. Size: 6 5/8 by 8". Calendar features 53 weekly grids, 12 full-page monthly grids, and double-page spreads of yearly grids for 2006 and 2007. ISBN 0-7649-3041-9. Click on the small picture to see an inside page. Additional publications available in our Edward Gorey Gallery."--© Pomegranate |
