Negotiate Your Medical Bills, by Lynn M. Derrwaldt, Ph.D., is a long-overdue answer to the nationwide problem of US health care becoming prohibitively expensive, and out of reach for a growing number of Americans. The book also offers the results of a study of hundreds of health care consumers and providers, to determine the feasibility of using negotiation to lower the consumers' medical bills. The phenomenal increases in health-care costs in the United States have driven countless people into the risky position of having no health coverage whatsoever, or having to settle for policies with such enormous deductibles that they effectively have no coverage except for catastrophic emergencies and major medical problems. Fortunately, Lynn Derrwaldt is quite knowledgeable about the medical profession in America, and serves as a consumer advocate for people caught in the system. This book explores the problem in detail, as well as potential solutions for patients who are willing to open negotiations to try to reach more affordable charges for the health care received. What is most unique about this book, is that it also contains one of the few polls that has been conducted of health consumers and providers, in order to gauge the feasibility of negotiation. These figures are far more meaningful than the massaged and out-of-date statistics generated by governments at all levels, to say nothing of the figures used by HMOs and other health-care organizations in their marketing literature. I recently had a medical procedure wherein some of the providers were out of the insurance company's network. One of providers charged 3 times what my insurance company paid to them, the same that the insurance company would have paid 100% to an in-network provider. I am left to take care of the remainder of the bill.
I bought this book in the hope that it would help me to be able to negotiate with them for reduced fees. Basically this book shows the result of a simple survey that someone took in a small geographic area that shows some providers say they will negotiate and some say they won't. It provides absolutely no guidance on how to negotiate lower fees. This book was a waste of money for me.

I wouldn't have known it was even possible before reading this book. After reading the study and polls, it has given me the confidence to pursue lower health care costs. This book is just one step in the process of learning how to decrease my health expenses. I have already saved myself $150, the first time I negotiated. That's more than 10 times what I paid for the book.
