I have read 4-5 books on this topic -- this is by far the best. The others are too lengthy, more for academia or career-services professionals. But this one carries the nuts & bolts, along with the clear step-by-step methods & best advice that the other books gloss over or ignore.
With this book, I have coached several colleagues & myself -- one of them got a salary offer $10,000 ABOVE what the company was initially offering. Another negotiated a sign-on bonus that was originally non-existent. When I first read it (in '99), I gave my closest friends copies of it for Christmas! How's that for an endorsement?

I have owned this book for quite some time and it is always at the top of my most recommended list.
I once used the techniques in this book to convince an employer to change their base offer from 45K to 90K + Bonus. I took the job! GREAT BOOK!

I'm a career coach and my clients have utilized the strategies in this book with great success. Last week a client suggested that the title should be, "How To Make $2000 A Minute" because by taking two minutes to ask a recruiter if her starting salary could be increased, she received $4000 more in base pay. Other clients have negotiated even more. This book is definitely worth the small investment to purchase it as there is a good chance that the reader can recover the cost of the book many times over.

The book was "good". It didn't necessarily teach me anything new, but I value it as a resource on not compromising. Thank you for a well written guide.

This book was down to earth and realistic and it provided simple strategies that were easy to follow. People expect you to negotiate when you are given a job offer and it reflects poorly on your own skills if you do not attempt to at all. Following the instructions in this book allowed me to get $4000 more added on to my salary than I was initially offered. You need to read this book early on in the job search process because there are strategies that you need to implement from the beginning - like figuring out how to avoid revealing what your salary requirements are or what you are currently making. This is critical to maintaining your ability to negotiate when it comes down to it.
Anyway, I would highly recommend this book for those who have not had much experience negotiating salaries. It gives simple, easy to follow tips that actually work. You will be pleased by the results!

As someone who knows nothing about negotiating this book provided valuable information about salary negotiation. I found out that I was doing everything you are NOT supposed to do. Warning: this book is full of typos and editing mistakes, but for the price the core information was worth it.

Time-tested ... Proven effective!,
This review is from: Negotiating Your Salary: How To Make $1,000 A Minute 2006 Edition (Paperback)
I write resumes and coach job seekers. Roughly 15 years ago, when I first read this book, I recommended it to a client for "beta testing". Overnight, before an interview, he studied it (it's an easy read). After accepting the position, he used the book's techniques and increased his starting salary by nearly 20%.
I now recommend Jack Chapman's book to everyone -- prospect or client -- who calls. Just last month, a new client read the book before a job interview. She increased her starting salary by $10K during initial negotiations. Then, while filling out employment papers with HR, she applied the techniques again and upped the salary by an additional $5K! Read it ... study it ... then use these effective negotiating techniques to your advantage. They work, even in this economy.

My hat goes off to Jack Chapman because he has enabled countless people to earn more money for just a few seconds of doing what he advises. Jack has done a masterful job of telling all job seekers, or even those who are discussing their current salary with an existing employer, how to easily increase their income in a way that is subtle, yet quite effective. A must read for anyone who is negotiating pricing or salary!

Several lessons to be learned in here,

Jack Chapman has several lessons in this book that we can all learn from. He starts by making you realize how quickly we move into talking about salary and settling on whatever happens to seem "safe" (so as to not "loose" the job opportunity in front of us), although this is perhaps one of the most important career decisions we can make at the moment.
He borrows from successful negotiation techniques at large and applies them with laser-sharp focus on negotiating the best possible salary with all parts winning. Included in the book is a discussion of elements such as evaluating stock option packages and helping the interviewee shape the job s/he is applying for, by having the interview be paced differently. Not groundbreaking, but very useful for those planning to make a career move.

Not recommended for top employers,

Before you eagerly take the advice of this "full proof" method to make $1000 a minute, take the advice with a few grains of salt. The most competitive positions at the top companies (ie. Finance) will not be happy when you employ the tactic of trying to fudge your salary, especially if you do not have experience in the industry. Most likely, the competition for these positions is so fierce that anyone demanding over their typically preset ceiling will be shown the door and another eager and qualified candidate who is more forthright about salary to be offered the position. Be careful of completely losing your chances when you keep your salary range from the employer. What the author doesn't tell you is the risk of the person across the desk showing you the door when they sense that you are not in their price range. Speaking from experience and having read the book, this is a real possibility. This book can cost you a lot more than $1000, out of your own potential income.
