Editorial Reviews

The 10th disc from this stellar artist, NeGrass (pronounced "KNEE-grass") is a collection of original and traditional Negro spirituals, field hollers and bluegrass music. This is inspired work - Laura's imagined history of how it might have been for her grandparents as they were being released from slavery and stepping into a free, yet uncertain, life. This joyful & heartbreaking story comes to life through Laura's soulful vocals with help from Tim O'Brien, Tracy Nelson, Barbara Lamb, Scott Vestal, Jeff Autry, Rob Ickes, Mike Bub and Alice Vestal. Includes three duets with Tim and Tracy's harmonies on two other tracks!

While I like her rockin' stuff a little better, this is a great cd and worth the money.

The secondary reason this album works so well is that THIS IS THE MUSIC LAURA SHOULD BE SINGING!

I stumbled unto this cd and after listening to a few samples I knew I had to purchase it.

Laura Love has an amazing voice. I recommended this album strongly to a friend of mine who idolizes Tim O'Brien. He bought the cd and then turned around and told a whole bunch of other people. Their harmonies are spellbinding. "Savin" has something new to hear every time I listen to it. This recording is one of those genre busting albums that creates its own place in music. I'd love to see the reactions of the old puritan bluegrass/gospel fans if we could force em to listen.

For this album, Laura Love has returned to her own Octoroon Biography label (after four albums on major labels), and the results are excellent. As the last reviewer said, it's 'different' in that it's more 'bluegrass' than her usual 'Afro-Celt' offerings (hence the title, 'NeGrass', which by the way is also a play on 'negress', a sn often derogatory term used to descrie a black woman).

When I first heard this album, I was stuck by how all of the songs 'stuck' with me, particularly "Saskatchewan (Juneteenth)", "Passin'", and her reworking of a song that originally appeared on her 'Octoroon' album, "Can't Understand." If you are a Laura Love fan, you will love this album (no pun intended).

I own most of Laura Love's other albums and liked them all except Got No Easter Clothes. The music on Negrass was unexpectedly different from the others, but absolute dynamite. I love an album that I can sing along with, and this is one. The songs are imaginative, sometimes playful, sometimes plaintive, easy to commit to memory. The music is different from what's on the "Afro-Celt" albums. She's in fine voice, as usual.

Years ago, I discovered Laura Love's music while browsing the listening section of a bookstore, and became hooked instantly. Her vocal range is incredible, and each of her CDs explores a different style. If you appreciate her voice, it doesn't matter what she sings.

In 2007, when she was promoting this CD, I had the good fortune to see her in concert. WOW! She is amazing! During the concert, she gave the background story for each of the songs on this CD - all are very personal, and are about her journey exploring her family's history of slavery and emancipation; there are real people and heartaches behind each song. Powerful stuff.

I think that this is Laura's best CD, with complex music and vocals, but if you want to introduce someone to her music, I would start with 14 Days and save NeGrass as a treat once they appreciate her. For hard-core Laura Love fans, this CD delivers her best work yet. Enjoy, and spread the word about this great artist!
