Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 7-12. From the African American Experience series, this title chronicles the history of black baseball from the 1880s through the birth of the Negro Leagues in the 1920s to its heyday in the 1930s and 1940s and its demise in the 1950s. Writing for an older audience than Cooper's Playing America's Game or Gardner and Shortelle's Forgotten Players , Margolies starts with great material and tells his story well. He includes the experiences of black players who went to Mexico and the Caribbean to play and discusses the older players who never made it to the majors, though the doors eventually opened to younger black rookies. Black-and-white photographs of teams and individual players appear together in a center section. The appendix lists three decades of standings for teams in the Negro Leagues. Carolyn Phelan --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
