4.0 out of 5 stars The Negro Leagues Book review, August 26, 2000

This review is from: The Negro Leagues Book (Paperback)
This book has more than enough stats about the Negro Leagues than you'll ever need. Plus there isn't a star, semi-star or player that this book doesn't cover. The only problem I had with the book was the amount of stories covered. I was hoping for lots of stories by players and others who saw and/or knew the players. This was short because of the overwhelming number of stats of players. However, I would definately recommend this book for anyone interested in the Negro Leagues and baseball in general. In reading about the numbers put up by stars such as Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and Turkey Stearns (among others) it struck me in amazement that these men were not allowed to play with white players. Just look at Jackie Robinson, he was amazing, and he wasn't nearly as good as some of the other Negro players. The book hammered this home-these guys were the best, period; and if they had played in MLB with the white players, baseball would have been a lot different. Great book for stats, players, and some short stories. If you're looking for more stories about the Negro leagues, you might want to look for another book but no serious baseball fan should be without "The Negro Leagues Book." The authors didn't miss a beat.
